04/03/2007 7:20 PM ET Box > Zito's Giants debut spoiled by Padres First, fourth inning trip up new San Francisco ace By Chris Haft / MLB.com SAN FRANCISCO -- A new year brought a familiar Opening Day result for the San Francisco Giants, who lost, 7-0, Tuesday to the San Diego Padres. The Giants' 50th home opener in San Francisco history looked a lot like the season opener they played exactly a year ago at San Diego, where they lost, 6-1. Right-hander Jake Peavy, who limited the Giants to one run and four hits in seven innings that night, was just as stingy this time before a full house of 42,773 at sun-washed AT&T Park. He lasted six innings, surrendering three singles. Barry Zito performed erratically while absorbing the decision in his much- anticipated Giants debut, yielding three runs (two earned) and four hits in only five innings. Zito pitched three perfect innings, but faltered in the first and fourth. Brian Giles hammered a one-out double off Zito in the first inning and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's soft two-out single. Mike Cameron walked to christen the fourth inning and advanced to second on Gonzalez's groundout, a one-hopper that second baseman Ray Durham snared by diving to his left. The Giants' euphoria over Durham's nice play quickly faded as Josh Bard, who went 4-for-5, singled home Cameron. After third baseman Pedro Feliz muffed Khalil Greene's grounder for an error, Kevin Kouzmanoff's single loaded the bases. Zito then walked Jose Cruz Jr., the former Giant, to force in a run. San Diego added a run in the seventh. Cruz tripled leading off against Kevin Correia and scored one out later on reliever Jonathan Sanchez's wild pitch. The Padres settled matters with three runs in the eighth. Greene delivered an RBI single, Cruz contributed a run-scoring groundout and Russell Branyan delivered a pinch-hit double.
