In a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at AT&T Park, there were multiple moments that could have altered the outcome, but if you ask starting pitcher Matt Morris, the defeat was all on his shoulders. No matter that he gave up only three runs and struck out eight Bucs over eight innings, the veteran right-hander pointed to a chillingly familiar fourth-inning event that has dogged him all year. A two-run homer by Jason Bay proved fatal and marked Morris' third straight game -- all losses -- in which the opposition has hit a costly home run. Morris, 3-7 with only one victory in his last 11 outings, can legitimately feel snake-bit, but he felt the venom came from within. "That's a crucial inning to get a shutdown," said Morris, after the Giants scored twice in the third inning to go ahead, 2-1. "I gave up the single to Sean Casey and fall behind 2-0 with two offspeed pitches to Bay. "I needed a strike, a quality strike, and I threw a heater there -- the location wasn't where I wanted it to be and he hit it out. It ended up costing me the game." It's a recurring refrain, and despite the Giants' bats being fairly sluggish, Morris said it's his mission every outing to throw a shutout, and if that isn't enough, so be it. "I've lost 1-0 games before, so every pitch is meaningful," said Morris. "You got the heart of their lineup up there and I have to be better, especially after we took the lead." In his last three games, Morris has a 4.05 ERA, giving up nine runs over 20 innings. Yet there were other factors Friday that helped doom the Giants, who had won six of their last eight and had been receiving all-around good play. For one, Barry Bonds wasn't healthy enough to play, as his aching side was still sore, leaving rookie Eliezer Alfonzo to bat with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth. He struck out. Another big play was in the sixth when Omar Vizquel singled off winning pitcher Victor Santos (4-6) and then headed for third on Moises Alou's base hit to left fielder Bay. Vizquel was chugging near the bag with third-base coach Gene Glynn windmilling his right arm -- the green light -- as Bay lobbed the ball into the cutoff man, shortstop Jack Wilson. But quick as you can say, "Uh oh," Wilson whipped the ball to third as Vizquel saw Glynn hold up his left arm, the signal to get back to the base as fast as he can. But Vizquel slipped a bit in the dirt. He was out. "I was coming hard to third base, thinking I could score if something goes wrong on the play," said Vizquel. "But obviously they played it perfectly, and I was too far off the base." Vizquel said that play is practiced in Spring Training, watching how the fielder throws the ball in, and if the toss is to second base, the odds favor the runner. "[Glynn] was obviously thinking what I was thinking -- he wanted me to score if something went wrong -- but he made the throw to the cutoff man and we were stuck." And a possible game-tying run was lost. But the Giants' misfortune wasn't over. In the ninth, Alou knocked his second single of the game off closer Mike Gonzalez, then with two out, Pedro Feliz slammed a ball just over the third-base bag and supposedly headed into the Giants' bullpen. Yet the baseball bounced off the dirt and right into the stands. Pinch-runner Jason Ellison was ordered to stop running, while Feliz was held at second with a ground-rule double. After Jose Vizcaino was walked, Alfonzo fanned. While Feliz felt Ellison wouldn't have scored anyway, the speedy second-year player said, "For sure" when asked if he thought he'd reach the plate. "I was already rounding when I saw the ball bounce that way," said Ellison. "I didn't see it happen, so I was kind of surprised when I was stopped." --
