06/09/2006 2:58 AM ET Giants get a wild win over Pirates Missed popups, errant pitch give San Francisco victory By Rich Draper / MLB.com The Giants celebrate after Eliezer Alfonzo (right) scored the winning run on a wild pitch. (Ben Margot/AP) SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants' 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at windy AT&T Park on Thursday night should easily win first prize for the All-Ugly contest, as it seemed more an exercise in futility and erratic play than anything else. There were bloopers that hit grass instead of leather, a fateful fly that plopped into a glove then escaped, too many Giants runners succumbing to old age on the bases and a game-deciding pitch that screamed into the dirt, never to be retrieved. In classic sports terminology, San Francisco manager Felipe Alou said, "I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty" after watching his club take the first of a four-game series against the Bucs and win its fourth game in the last five and sixth in the last eight. "Weird game, I'll say that," chuckled Giants infielder Ray Durham, whose single to left in the eighth allowed Lance Niekro to score and tie the game at 4. The key moments came in the bottom of the ninth, as rookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo hit a soft fly past the infield dirt near the left-field line, the ball dropping between third sacker Freddy Sanchez and shortstop Jack Wilson. Coulda been caught. After a Steve Finley sacrifice bunt, Randy Winn's fly to right field was snared by running second baseman Jose Castillo, who then saw the ball tumble out. Shoulda been caught. Then again, this is AT&T Park, where the capricious winds play tricks on infielders heading for the foul lines and midfield, and Alou has seen it happen often. "The field played to our advantage," he said. "We've [seen] so many fly balls be dropped here over the years at second base. The right fielder has to be at the line there, playing that big gap. [Winds?] Oh yeah, yes." Durham knows the scenario well, as he's gamboled into the greenery multiple times on short flies, but he says if you watch him closely, he'll test the wind by throwing grass in the air, and a built-in compass seems to guide him to the right spot. He even felt for Castillo, whose error gave Winn life, and when Bucs reliever Damaso Marte walked Omar Vizquel to load the bases, that set up pitcher Matt Capps' sailing-wide throw, sending Alfonzo sprinting home. "When [Winn's] ball went up and I saw the right fielder come in and converging and saw [Castillo] backpedaling, I knew he was in trouble," said Durham. "That's a tough play going that way -- that wind can change at any given moment." "I'm glad we won," said Durham, admittedly frustrated that the Giants were only 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position this night. "It kills a team. We lose the ballgame, and you look at opportunities we had. If we're going to get where we want to get, we can't have that happen." Alfonzo, meantime, can hardly believe his good fortune. With catcher Mike Matheny out with a concussion, he's merely clubbed a homer in his big-league debut, seen the Giants go 4-0 with him behind the plate, caught Jason Schmidt's amazing 16-strikeout victory Tuesday, then doubled and singled Thursday, capping it by scoring the winning run. "The first [moment] when I see the ball go to the dirt, I reacted -- I have to win the game," said Alfonzo. "I'm going no matter what. I thought this is the time to go to the plate." Alfonzo hit some disappointing deep shots to left and center, but doubled in the seventh frame, helping lead to the third run. Alfonzo says he loves to show off his "wheels," display his speed, and Alou didn't call in a pinch-runner for the catcher in the ninth. "I'd love to steal a base," said the catcher. The strange game started with rookie Matt Cain on a three-game winning streak, but he gave up three runs in the first two innings and was lucky not to give up more, as the Pirates threatened to break it open yet left nine runners stranded over four innings. "But to be able to come out of that four innings with just three runs, as bad as that outing was, I can look back as I was able to keep us in the game," said Cain, admitting he was never in sync. "It definitely does go down as winning ugly. We got a lot of breaks tonight. I never got a good tempo going. I just never slowed down and it just kept carrying over. But after 90 pitches in four, that's just a lot." Rich Draper is a reporter for MLB.com.
