04/22/2004 6:46 PM ET Giants' woes continue in loss By Rich Draper / MLB.com SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants had hoped to extricate themselves out of an early-season hole with a 10-game homestand but instead went 3-7 at SBC Park, climaxed by a 9-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday. Entering Friday night's start of a tough three-game series at Los Angeles against the West Division-leading Dodgers, San Francisco has dropped three straight games and seven of its last eight. Starting pitching proved the culprit again, as veteran Kirk Rueter gave up nine hits and six runs -- three earned -- over only four innings. Over the past three games, Giants starters Dustin Hermanson, Jason Schmidt and Rueter have only pitched 15 2/3 innings combined, given up 25 hits and sport an 11.57 overall ERA. Among the starters, only Jerome Williams (2) and Hermanson (1) have notched victories. The Padres scored six runs in the second inning, with Khalil Greene's two-run double the highlight and a fielding error by second baseman Ray Durham costing three unearned scores. Phil Nevin went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, two singles and a walk, while scoring twice. San Diego starter Ismael Valdez allowed Durham's leadoff homer in the first and another run as J.T. Snow doubled and scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Michael Tucker. It was Durham's fourth leadoff homer as a Giant and 26th lifetime leadoff blast , giving him sole possession of 12th place all-time. Valdez blanked the Giants until the sixth when San Francisco scored two runs on Neifi Perez's triple. Giants reliever Brian Cooper issued three runs in the sixth on Nevin's two-RBI blow and Brian Buchanan's sacrifice fly, bringing home Valdez, on board after an error by left fielder Dustan Mohr. San Francisco reliever Scott Eyre made his first appearance of the season after suffering back pain in Spring Training, pitching a scoreless eighth.
