很久没看TIME 刚刚看了一下 Jan. 25 2010的那期 看到这个 http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1953692,00.html 纸本上的标题下的有点太耸动 (网路的标题不一样) 害得我有点小不高兴 纸本的标题是这样的 Save the Planet: Eat More Beef Environmentalists have been giving cows a bad rap in recent years. Between what bovines eat and what the excrete, cattle production emits a lot of greenhouse gas. But if fed solely grass, cows could play a key role in reversing climate change. 其实整篇是在讲说 吃牧草的牛 因为不用牺牲大片森林、化肥、农药来制造谷物 不用谷物运输的化石燃料 牛吃牧草可以促使草生长速度加快 再加上牛的排泄物配合放牧的牛的踩踏 可以使排泄物进入表土而生成腐植质 做为很好的天然肥料 进而使得草的碳捕捉量上升 所以 吃牧草的牛 不只不会增加碳排放量 还可能减少大气中的碳 "If you suspend a cow in the air with buckets of grain, then it's a bad guy, but if you put it where it belongs--on the grass--that cow becomes not just carbon-neutral but carbon-negative." "With proper management, pastoralists, ranchers and farmers could achieve a 2% increase in soil-carbon levels on existing agricultural, grazing and desert lands over the next two decades." Some researchers hypothesize that just 1% increase(over, admittedly vast acreage)could be enough to capture the total equivalent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. 文章中的主角 Barbara Damrosch and Eliot Coleman 提到说目前联合国与世界各国提倡的不吃肉(或少吃肉)： "The idea that giving up meat is the solution for the world's ill is ridiculous." said Coleman "A vegetarian eating tofu made in a factory from soybeans grown in Brazil is responsible for a lot more CO2 than I am." 不过再怎麽说 这些都是要完全只吃天然牧草的牛才有的效果 在我们没办法使美国及世界各地其他的畜牧业大地主 改变现有的生产方式之前 我认为不吃(少吃)牛肉及其他肉类仍是最佳选择 或许当一个素食者或蔬食者是个权宜之计吧 但在现在的情况下 也不能称此计为愚蠢荒谬吧? 虽然他们的发现(如果是事实的话) 的确很有价值 我也相信他们本意是好的 有兴趣可以跟我借这一期的TIME --
