Andy Roddick retired from his Nasdaq-100 Open second-round match against Fernando Verdasco because of a wrist injury. Roddick called for his trainer to tape his wrist after the fifth game of the second set but decided to quit with the score 7-6 4-3 to his Spanish opponent. Verdasco took the defending champion to three sets at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells last week. Roddick said: "I wasn't able to hit the shots I wanted to hit." The defeat means Roddick will lose ground on world number two Lleyton Hewitt, who pulled out before the tournament began with injured toes. Roddick added: "I caught something, jammed it the wrong way. I knew something wasn't right. I hit three doubles in the tiebreak.
