The Dodgers and the right-handed reliever have tentatively agreed on a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League camp. A Rockies official acknowledged earlier Thursday that Colorado made an offer, although terms were still being discussed. Gagne, 34, won the NL Cy Young Award in 2003, when he was baseball's most dominant closer, while pitching for the Dodgers. Then-Dodgers manager Jim Tracy, who is managing the Rockies, watched Gagne's workout at Hi Corbett Field. Gagne also worked out for the Phillies and other teams, but ultimately chose a return to the Dodgers. Gagne always has been a favorite of Tracy's, but there is an emotional connection to the Dodgers. With "Game Over" flashing on the Dodger Stadium scoreboard and Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" blaring over the loudspeakers, Gagne brought excitement as well as unprecedented success. He converted a record 84 consecutive save chances. Gagne underwent right elbow surgery after the 2005 season and back surgery in 2006, then left the Dodgers as a free agent. In 2007, Gagne was linked to performance-enhancing drugs in the Mitchell Report. After a strong start to 2007 with the Rangers, Gagne suffered a slight rotator cuff tear. He had stints with the Red Sox in late 2007 and the Brewers in 2008, but was released in Spring Training 2009.
