Francis' agent, Jeff Fried, said Wednesday night that his client has narrowed
his list of suitors to two, one of which is the Heat. Francis, who also was
considering the Rockets, Mavericks and Clippers, could make a decision early
as today.
Francis, a three-time All-Star who received a $30 million buyout from
Portland last week, is believed to be seeking a two-year deal with a player
option for the second season.
''It's important to Steve that he finds the right fit,'' Fried said. ``Salary
considerations down the line are also important, but he wants to go somewhere
where he can help a team compete for a championship.''
The Heat is aggressively searching for depth at point guard. Its lone
experienced player at the position is incumbent starter Jason Williams, 31,
who has missed at least 20 games each of the past two seasons because of
injuries and is entering the last year of his contract.
