Yao, T-Mac come of age

Remember when Yao Ming would get shoved around by smaller players,
commit silly fouls and go long periods without being a factor in games?
Seems like a long time ago, doesn't it? Whatever happened to that Yao Ming?
The truth is, he never could have fulfilled all the expectations
that accompanied his arrival in the NBA almost five years ago.
He was supposed to score like Wilt Chamberlain,
defend like Bill Russell and pass like Bill Walton.
He was supposed to do all those things on his first day and then get better.
When it became clear he would need time to adjust,
he was dismissed too quickly as being soft or not good enough.
One of the things these NBA playoffs might force a lot of people
to do is take another look at Yao.
If they do, they'll find someone who might just be the NBA's best center,
an unstoppable force in the low post who averaged 25 points and 9.4 rebounds
in his fifth NBA season.
He has worked meticulously and relentlessly
to get stronger and in rhythm with the modern NBA.
When television cameras caught him this season telling an opposing player,
"You can't stop me," it was an indication that his confidence
and his game were at an elite status.
Perhaps it's the best indication of how far he has come
that he scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Game 1 of the
Rockets-Jazz series
and no one thought he had done anything special.
"I thought he had some good moments," coach Jeff Van Gundy said.
"I think we're going to need as good, if not better, to continue to win.
We've got to do what we do. That ball has to be driven into the post more.
When he's in the paint, he can't be looking to be Bill Walton passing.
If he's got a foot in the paint, we've got to get him more shots."
Tracy McGrady took over the game with an electrifying 16-point third quarter
as the Rockets rallied from a nine-point deficit to win 84-75.
Before McGrady shook off his playoff jitters,
Yao kept the Rockets in the game even as Utah threw waves of muscle at him.
Now, as the Jazz attempt to even the best-of-seven series at a game apiece
tonight at Toyota Center,
they're forced to confront what they can and can't accomplish against the
Rockets.
First of all, they can win. When they reviewed Game 1 on Sunday morning,
they were reminded how many open shots they had missed.
"Those are shots we normally make," Jazz forward Carlos Boozer said.
"If we make our shots, we'll be fine."
Van Gundy saw those open shots, too.
"You can't overlook in victory what you wouldn't overlook in defeat," he
said.
"We found a way to overcome whatever and win. The best thing you can say
about last night is that we survived."
His team shot poorly as well,
and in a series featuring teams that know each other inside and out, poor
shooting might be the norm.
"I just don't think you're going to see either team light it up," Jazz guard
Derek Fisher said.
"That's probably not going to be how this series plays out."
Two things won't change, and neither is good for the Jazz.
The Rockets are never out of a game as long as McGrady is on the floor.
When he gets going the way he did in Game 1,
there's almost nothing an opponent can do except hang on and hope the streak
ends quickly.
And as long as Yao is as aggressive as he was in Game 1,
the Rockets might not have many offensive blackouts.
"You're not going to stop great players," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.
"As long as I've been in this league,
I've never seen that. They may miss a few shots,
but they have the know-how to come back and get themselves in a rhythm and be
who they want to be."
When McGrady gets on a roll, defensive strategy hardly matters.
And Yao is bigger and stronger than anyone the Jazz have.
When the Rockets put them together three years ago,
they spoke of a repeat of the championship years.
Over the next few weeks, we'll get an indication about whether they were
right.
"Those two guys (McGrady and Yao) — what are you going to do with them?"
Sloan said.
"You guys give me an idea. I'd be willing to use it.
I'm going to see if I can make our guys bigger.
Do you think that will work? Maybe I can stretch 'em out."
He'll try something more basic.
Like forcing McGrady and Yao to work harder on the defensive end
and attempting to make them catch the ball farther from the basket than
they'd like.
Then again, special players typically find a way to overcome such things.
That's why the Rockets wanted them in the first place.
