He worked his up in the organization from peon, to a ssistant coach, to GM. Dawson's Rocket career started in the late 1970s (he wo rked on Del Harris' staff). He worked in the Rockets in various capacities bef ore being named GM in 1996. To be honest, Dawson's power as GM has varied. Wh en he was hired, Rudy Tomjanovich wielded much more power as two-time champion coach than Dawson did. As such, when we go through Dawson's body of personnel decisions, it is not really to credit or criticize many of his moves. Still, D awson has been a part of some big decisions for this franchise that can be exam ined. Coaches Dawson's power in the Rockets organization is best understood when evaluating h is coaching hires. Obviously, Rudy T pre-dated Dawson's tenuire as GM. In fac t, when Dawson was named GM, Rudy T had just won two titles and had reached ico n status in Houston. Dawson was in the odd position of having less power than his coach. Finally, after seven years (the last six of which the Rockets got n o further than the first round of the playoffs), Dawson and Les Alexander nudge d Rudy out the door. Tomjanovich's bladder cancer gave them the reason but it was clear that management wanted something new. It is impossible to evaluate Dawson's new hire Jeff Van Gundy because he hasn't coached yet. Nevertheless, Van Gundy was considered at least the second best coach available last summer. Most expect big improvements on the Rockets next year, especially defensively, because that is Van Gundy's forte. The Draft Under Dawson, the Rockets' draft has been a mixed bag: 1997 Rodrick Rhodes (24th pick) 1998 Michael Dickerson (14th pick) Bryce Drew (16th pick) Mirsad Turkcan (18th pick) 1999 Steve Francis (2nd pick) Kenny Thomas (22nd pick) 2000 Jason Collier (15th pick) 2001 Eddie Griffin (7th pick) 2002 Yao Ming (1st pick) Bostjan Nachbar (15th pick) 2003 none A pretty average list. The Rockets had many late picks that you can't fairly e valuate and a few good picks high in the draft the were no brainers like Ming a nd getting Francis in a deal when the Grizz had a gun to their head. Dickerson and Kenny Thomas certainly were nice finds. The Rockets have two ugly picks, however, in Collier and Griffin. Collier was taken right before Hedo Turkoglu, Desmon Mason, Quentin Richardson, and Jamal Magloire. That's almost maximum p ossible error with the pick as Collier did nothing in his three years in Housto n and these guys all could play. Griffin is a more controversial pick. He was acquired for Richard Jefferson an d some change. Griffin is still young and talented but demonstrates some troub ling tendencies on the court and off it. Griffin is 6'9 but is a very poor reb ounder and looks very raw. In addition, he recently went AWOL without any expl anation from Rocket camp. Jefferson has turned into a very good (and potential ly All Star level) player. This is not a good deal and has a chance to become even worse in the future based on the development or lack thereof of Griffin an d Jefferson. Dawson's best find was Cuttino Mobely in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft . Mobely has developed into a solid pro, which is about as good as you can get with a second rounder. The Rockets' only other second round pick of note in t he Dawson era is Ed Najera, who never played for the team. As a drafter, you h ave to conclude that Dawson has gotten the job done but is not dynamic. Transactions: Trades/Signings As for trades and signings, the decisions of Rocket management have been charac terized by shot-taking. This was not necessarily a bad idea as Dawson and comp any tried to squeeze another championship out of aging Clyde Drexler and Hakeem . To do so, they grabbed an aging Charles Barkley for all their young legs (Sa m Cassell and Robert Horry). The Rockets might actually have been better off k eeping Cassell but that isn't because Barkley played poorly. In fact, Sir Char les played quite well. The problem was they couldn't find an adequate point gu ard to replace Cassell and then Hakeem started to break down. The Rockets had only one clean shot with Clyde, Hakeem and Charles and that didn't quite work o ut. Still, the deal was made on sound logic at the time and you can't really f ault the Rockets for trying. Dawson's transaction history gets a little shakier after Barkley. The team sti ll thought they had a chance to win it all so they threw a lot of money at Scot tie Pippen (to replace the retiring Drexler). Pippen demonstrated quickly that he wasn't the player he was in the mid 1990s as his scoring average fell 4.6 p pg in Houston. Even worse, Pippen did not deal well with Houston and after he got torched by Kobe in the 1999 playoffs, Pippen basically demanded a trade by criticizing Barkley. The amazing thing was that the Rockets found someone to t ake Pippen's 5-year $55 million dollar contract. Pippen was clearly overpaid b y the Rockets but, again, they took a reasonable shot at the title with him and you further have to give them credit for dispatching him quickly when it was c lear that he didn't belong. Since Pippen, the Rockets have made one great deal (the Francis deal that we ta lked about above) and had a couple of bad signings. They overpaid for Maurice Taylor, who promptly tore his Achilles, and Shandon Anderson, whom they were ab le to dump on the Knicks after one poor season in Houston. Verdict It is hard to really evaluate all the transactions that have occurred during Da wson's tenure because it was not clear who had the final say on player moves. Was it Rudy or Dawson? And when did transactions come straight from Les Alexan der? I have no idea. Examining the Rockets since 1996 really teaches us that the Rockets are run differently than most other sports franchises and nothing d efinitive about Dawson the GM. I know that's a bit of a copout but guessing wh o ran the ship is a fool's errand. In fact, I expect Jeff Van Gundy to possibl y eclipse Dawson on some personnel moves in the future as well. One things for certain, stay tuned to the Rockets because they are certain to continue making their bold moves in the future. 问一下 这样转没问题吗 有的话我就自D 谢谢 --
