Love you. ─ Curt Chambers / after the show at Blinkin Lincoln, 2010 http://www.curtchambers.com/ http://www.myspace.com/curtchambers http://twitter.com/Curtdarockboy http://www.reverbnation.com/curtchambers 楔　子 　大约两年前的现在，在已隐藏的部落格crotchery时代，我曾写过一篇介绍Curt Chambers的文章，稍微修饰之後如下： Neo-Soul大将Eric Roberson於2007年出版的重要专辑《…Left》，Curt Chambers 的名字，不断出现在音乐人员表列中，甚至在第13首〈Couldn’t Hear Her〉，由 DJ Spinna制作、长达9分钟的曲子里，Eric Roberson还让Curt Chambers大肆表现他 的吉他独奏才华。 　来自费城，Curt Chambers (AKA Gas、Curt Da Rockboy、Philly's Rock Star) 是一位技法出众、富有舞台渲染力的吉他天才；Gas从小的偶像是Jimi Hendrix和 Prince，并凭着父亲支持和教堂环境薰陶的双管齐下，展开了他的音乐之路。 　在Eric Roberson (AKA ERRO)的《…Left》专辑里，其实Gas并没有把他的能力完 全的发挥出来（他同时还是一位键盘手），即使ERRO也是个着重现场乐器演奏、重拾 灵魂乐本质的音乐人，但毕竟ERRO走的是黑人传统节奏蓝调路线，而Gas却是一个彻彻 底底、完全服膺自身摇滚基因底下的疯狂乐手，加上他在大学修习的是爵士与表演课 程，自然懂得如何从音乐之中传达各式生命色彩。 说到这里，不得不先介绍Franklin Bridge。 　 Franklin Bridge是Gas的乐团，第一代成员有Rayfield "Ray Ray" Holloman （Guitar）、Lil" Darrell Robinson（Drum）、Wayne Moore（Bass）、Aaron Draper（percussion、已离团）以及Adam Blackstone（keyboard、已离团）。这群 怀抱共同音乐理念的费城与纽泽西年轻音乐人，自称玩着「Hip Rock Soul」，曾和 Jay-Z、LL Cool J、B.B. King、Jill Scott、Floetry、Lenny Kravitz、Gerald LeVert、Chrisette Michele、Bilal、Jeff Bradshaw、Kindred the Family Soul、 Anthony Hamilton、The Roots、Vivian Green、Leela Jame、Heather Headley、 Sharrissa、JazzyFatnastees、Will Smith和Pharrell Williams等人在录音室或巡 回演出中合作，而他们也曾发表过属於自己的音乐专辑。 能够准确拿捏舞台效果和观众反应是Franklin Bridge的长处，身为Franklin Bridge的领袖人物，他与每个摇滚的乐团一样，浑身上下充满着吸引歌迷目光的个人 特质。 　 留着修整过的短髭、目测约莫六尺的身高、锻链过後的厚实胸肌和上半身，天生条 件极佳。 　登上舞台的Gas，散发着不屑一顾的气质，尤其是那肌肉线条分明的双臂，拨起吉 他，力道与美学无一不缺；习惯上半身微倾，再拱起腹部撑起吉他，毫不造作的十足 雅痞样；绚丽的花式指法中，完全流露出一副天赋异秉的姿态，说是性感一点也不为 过！ 从ERRO的专辑中，我们可以发现Gas这号人物存在，而在同一张专辑里，Franklin Bridge的团员也参与其中并担任乐手。《…Left》在我终於拿到实体音乐後，翻了翻 内页介绍，发现ERRO把每一首歌的创作背景交待得很清楚，而半数左右以上都经过 Gas的吉他着墨，可见ERRO是多麽肯定Gas的音乐本事。 　若最後要给Gas下一个注解，那我会说，「Curt Chambers真是一位野男子！若亲眼 目睹他的现场演出，鼻血要不流，很难！」 2010...... 　这两年内，我不时注意Gas有没有新的音乐作品，或者参与哪位音乐人的制作，而更教 我期待的，无非是他何时会集结自己的音乐理念并呈现世人面前。终於，在2010年的首月 （正确的说是1月21至22日之间），Curt Chambers，他的第一张作品《Crash Landing》 透过网路平台发表了！ 《Crash Landing》 http://bit.ly/crashlanding_mixtape http://www.zshare.net/download/7152140704c4f48a/ http://www.datpiff.com/DJ_Active_Curt_Chambers__Crash_Landing.m93606.html 　这张专辑虽以Mixtape命名，但我发现《Crash Landing》介於Mixtape和一般专辑的形 式（一般专辑是不容许那麽多的「说话」，像是「宣传对外窗」的Mixtape也不会具备如 此文艺构思。），甚至有点自述取向。24首歌曲里，Gas说了不少他的「感想」（Voice Interlude），除了介绍他的各类网站，还有一些身为1980年後出生的世代，其接触音乐 的心路历程。 　《Crash Landing》的歌曲可分为三部分： 一、与市场上的音乐作连系：如〈Videotapes (feat. Eric Roberson & DJ Active)〉、〈Last Dance〉、〈Blow Ya Mind (feat. Thomas Clay)〉、〈Crash Landing (feat. Thomas Clay)〉、〈Incredible Remix〉，Gas在後制方面使用了不少 音乐效果，容易引人注目； 　二、吉他狂奏的音乐：如〈Can't Stop Loving You〉、《…Left》时的创作 〈Couldn't Hear Her (feat. Eric Roberson)〉； 　三、名曲翻唱：D'Angelo的〈How Does It Feel〉、Kanye West的〈Say You Will〉、 ERRO和Osunlade写给Musiq Soulchild的〈Mary Go Round〉、Prince的〈Purple Rain〉。 　当然，专辑里最「甜」的那首歌当属〈Need One Another (feat. Tesa Williams)〉 了。　 《Crash Landing》与业界的关系 负责《Crash Landing》专辑大方向的，是同样出身於费城，自「Neo-Soul学派」着名 搭档Carvin & Ivan (Karma Productions)的Ivan Barias。 　但我们不禁想问，《Crash Landing》和诸如Jill Scott、Raheem DeVaughn、Musiq Soulchild等Neo-Soul音乐人的音乐，好像有点不同，因此，我们可以进一步尝试了解， Carvin Haggins和Ivan Barisa，以及另一组「Neo-Soul学派」着名搭档Vidal & Dre （Andre Harris和Vidal Davis），两组人马的作品到了近期似乎已非执着於2000年左右 的Neo-Soul态样（pattern），换句话说，从DJ Jazzy Jeff那里学习音乐制作的他们， 经过时间的推移，也必须将Erykah Badu的名言「Neo-soul is dead. I never knew what that was anyway」给「实践化」，更换跑道以取得延续音乐生涯的途径（approach）。 什麽是过去的Neo-Soul？以两张专辑为例：2000年Musiq Soulchild的 《Aijuswanaseing》和2001年Jill Scott的《Experience: Jill Scott 826+》。 《Aijuswanaseing》无需赘述，相信各位必定熟知，时值Neo-Soul的辉煌年代，Calvin & Ivan几乎担纲整张专辑的歌曲撰写与制作责任（请见专辑内页或Wiki）；《Experience: Jill Scott 826+》则是Jill Scott甫出道时，现场加录音室的二合一专辑，那时还待在 DJ Jazzy Jeff麾下的Andre Harris和Vidal Davis尚未合体，也分别谱写制作了专辑内的 许多歌曲，曲曲超时（也就是非制式的4分钟规模，甚者超过10分钟）。 　两组Neo-Soul人马的音乐内容已经不复当年凭着一股开创新乐风的向往，当时每一首有 棱有角的曲子，拿到现在绝对不会以同样手法呈现。讲究个人风格的东西，会与市场格格 不入，毕竟，需要转弯思考的音乐，很多人都懒得聆听。 　所以，Curt Chmabers和Ivan Barias的合作，我们可以以两个方向看待： 一、Ivan Barias的Neo-Soul已经是市场导向，但这没有任何的不好，因为Erykah Badu 都说Neo-Soul挂了，听者也毋庸打着灯笼费心寻找「它」； 　二、网路与全球化，造成音乐的全观性（holistic）；意即，我们可以随时听见与看到 最新最多的音乐产物（如同与美国同步甚至更早看到首演的美国电影），同时也抑制了音 乐的流通性（因为太多生产要素在网路与全球化构成的场域竞争，造成严重的排挤效 应）。这里的意思是，音乐人已经「退位」到传统年代，只能在家乡发片、宣传。《Crash Landing》从制造到上市流通，只要有网路都可以获得第一手讯息，但讽刺的是，它也只 能待在费城和纽泽西「透过网路」发挥效益。这，就是「全球化底下的在地迷思」。 无论如何，套用ERRO对Gas的祝福，「Curt, I have truly enjoyed your growth as a person, musician, artist and friend」，尽管《Crash Landing》称不上是黑人音乐的 里程碑，然而从融合多种黑人音乐品种与风格的角度审度，它确实表现出不落俗套的格 局；况且，《Crash Landing》不只是Neo-Soul的脱胎换骨，也提供我们对於音乐回归 「一地一城」的全球化反思。最後还是老话一句，拥抱实体的感觉比起数位下载要真实许 多，你可以去唱片行买音乐实体，亦能於网路下单获得它。 　1月30日在费城Blinkin Lincoln的专辑发表已圆满结束，祝Gas的音乐事业顺利！ Getting to Know You: Curt Chambers (Dictated Excerpts from Personal Interview with Veronica Hinds, Shiney Nickel Productions/Community College of Philadelphia Production) Introduction “My name Curt Chambers and I am from Philly [Philadelphia, PA]. I have been performing with my band and by myself for about 4 years now. As far as describing the feel of my music, I would say it is a combination of Rock and R&B, so it is your favorite hard hitting rock band and your favorite male vocalist stuck in a room forced to make a record. I am all about inspiring people in music, or in life in general, so I want people to feel inspired when they hear my music. I want them to feel like Curt did it, he got up and he did it, man I am going to do it, I can do this, okay, let [us] do it.” Who are some of your influences? “Cold Pay, Usher, Joe, Urbana, Prince, and I can not forget the one who is a major influence, and that is Jimi Hendrix. The reason I am going in that direction is because I am a fan of the mixture of Rock and R&B, the two styles of music I have always loved. Maybe someone has decided to put these two [genres] together before me, I do not want to discredit anyone, but I describe those influences in that order because that is simply how they have influenced me. I want to know how to really touch people with what I play as opposed to, I have this hot lick I worked on all day, I am going to play this song. I like to key [into] my audience to spiritually lift people in my playing.” Who influenced you the most in your career? “My father, telling me that my gift will always make room for me, which has been a lesson in to always be patient, if it is not happening right now, it is going to happen later. Always give room for your gift.” What inspires you musically? “I would say life experiences, but that is for a large variety of artists.
