He batted over .300 only once, his power numbers were never that great and his stolen-base count isn't all that high. Obviously, they were wrong in year one. But in any four-year deal, I wouldn't make a judgment after one year, especially when you consider the adjustment period. Though he is definitely a big name, the Red Sox have no reason to think that he would be any more effective than Clay Buchholz, Julian Tavarez or Kyle Snyder. The Red Sox have Youkilis under their contractual control for another three seasons. A player needs six years to become a free agent.
