But he did prove to be quite a formidable hitter. Using a smooth swing from the left side, Young led the Cardinals in hitting at .340. Young has a short stride at the plate with nice balance to set up a quick, compact swing with excellent bat speed that he uses to hit the ball hard all over the field. Young is about the definition of a pesky hitter, fouling a lot of pitches off and doing whatever he can to get on base, actually getting hit by 18 pitches this season. He doesn’t show much power and needs a little work on pitch recognition, but he’s a very tough out and can drill the ball if you give him anything to hit. And once he gets on base, Young doesn’t have much speed but has outstanding instincts and should be a solid stolen base threat moving forward. Young did have some throwing issues with the Cardinals this year, but hopefully that should be resolved naturally. But we can’t talk about Young without talking about how incredible it was that he played third base for the Cardinals. Young is a natural second baseman and played the position as a freshman at Louisville, but team need forced him to third base and he played there and did a pretty good job there the last two years. Between his ability to change positions and his ability to get hit by pitches, it’s clear that Young is an excellent team player who does whatever he can to help his team win. Adding that to his talent makes him the type of player you want on your roster. In addition, Ramirez’s arm action is very clean and repeatable, certainly a good thing, but it also rids the Rays of another avenue to potentially get him some more velocity. The Rays are going to try their best to develop him assuming they can get him signed, but for the large part, his stuff right now may be essentially the same as what it is moving forward. The good news for Ramirez and the reason he got selected as high as he did, though, is that his current stuff is still quite impressive. Its best purpose could very well be to set up his changeup, which he does a great job selling with the same arm slot as his fastball before finishing with nice sink. The Rays are well known for their ability to develop changeups in their pitchers, and adding Ramirez to their organization with a solid base for his changeup already will be quite a treat. Ramirez’s breaking ball is where it gets a little more sketchy, but Ramirez has shown some flashes with a big-breaking low-70's curveball while also fiddling around with a low-80's slider. For a high school pitcher, Ramirez has an impressive arsenal, and it should only get better as he works his way up the professinoal ranks. TAMPA BAY RAYS Austin Pruitt Drafted by: Tampa Bay Rays (No. 278 Overall) Position：RHP DOB: 08/31/89 (Age: 23) Height/Weight: 5’11”/180 lbs Bats/Throws: R/R School: Houston (TX) Pruitt was too small to play for a Division I baseball program coming out of high school, so he ended up at Navarro Junior College in Texas. After a freshman year that didn’t attract much attention, suddenly Pruitt burst onto the scene as a sophomore in 2011, leading all junior college pitchers with a 0.81 ERA to find himself an opportunity at Houston. With the Cougars, once again he faded into the background after a season that saw him manage just a 4.25 ERA with only 57 strikeouts in 91 innings (5.6 K/9). But then once again Pruitt did much better the second time around. This season for Houston, Pruitt went 10-5 with a 2.85 ERA and a 92-24 strikeout to walk ratio in 113.2 innings pitched, completing at least 6 innings in each of his starts and tossing a Conference USA-leading 5 complete games, and this time teams couldn ’t ignore him. If the past few years are any indication, Pruitt won’t be too impressive in his pro debut, but once he adapts to his surroundings after that, who knows what kind of heights he can achieve. But what he did in his senior season was drastically improve his command, throwing a ton of strikes and consistently locating his fastball down in the zone to force weak contact, especially on the ground. Pruitt doesn’t get much of a downward angle on his pitches, but it didn’t matter because he was just painting the bottom of the zone. Then Pruitt adds in his second offering, a curveball that has been effective for him since his high school days. Pruitt has honed it into a true 12-to-6 downer in the mid-70's with huge late break just as it approaches the hitter, and he can use it both as a chase pitch and for called strikes at the bottom of the strike zone. Pruitt also mixes in the occasional changeup, something you know the Rays will look to further refine. Pruitt makes all his pitches play up from a deceptive delivery that he does an excellent job repeating, just another way he seems to outperform expectations time after time.
