He has below-average speed, although he has the ability to stick at second base thanks to great instincts. But that’s where the criticism ends and the praise begins. Wong, the younger brother off Cardinals top second base prospect Kolten Wong, shares his brother’s talent at the plate, and may even be a touch better in the power department. Wong has a short, compact stroke at the plate, but don’t hear that along with his size and think he’s a little tap hitter. He shows excellent bat speed, doing a great job to barrel the ball and smack line drives to all fields. He has mostly a gap-to-gap approach right now, but he actually has his moments where he hits for some power, something that the Rays will look to hone once they get him signed. When it’s all said and done, Wong could be a very good hitter for average who shows good power for a second baseman as well. And his chances to get there might be quite a bit higher than your average high school pick because he shows very good pitch recognition and plate discipline for a high school player. He uses his patience to help him find good pitches to hit, and as he learns to pick his spots to drive the ball, that’s when you ’ll see the power. Wong is an advanced hitter with a chance to be in the major leagues in three or four years if everything goes well. But Wong actually has some dabbled in some catching, and that might be a possibility moving forward. He has the type of strong, durable frame that you want from a catcher to go along with the arm strength, and there could be some potential there, especially when factoring in his hitting. On the other hand, trying him at catcher would substantially slow his rise to the major leagues and the fact that the Rays listed him as a second baseman hints that they’re really drafting him for his bat. Wong has the ability to be an above-average as an offensive-minded second baseman and make an impact in the Rays’ lineup before long. But being that type of scrappy player by no means indicates that he doesn’t have some talent. Field makes a ton of contact with a compact swing with above-average bat speed, and he uses it well, shooting the gaps. He’s difficult to strike out, following a lot of pitches off, but despite his propensity for contact he draws a good amount of walks. He was always considered a player with little power, but he has actually started to change that perception a little bit as he has done a good job driving a few pitches when he gets the opportunity and could in fact be a 10-15 homer guy down the line. That power is really what separates him from the players we discussed above. On the opposite edge of the spectrum, Field is a very good bunter, and while he isn’t very fast, he steals bases using good instincts. But as a professional, Field won’t hit nearly enough to profile as a regular there and will instead play a lot of the other position he played in college, second base. Field has good hands and a solid arm, and pairing that with good range gives him a chance to be an above-average defender. Field has a chance to be an average to above-average second baseman thanks to his nice ability on both sides of the ball and all the things he does to help a team win. But considering he already has left field experience under his belt, you have to wonder whether he could end up as more a super-utility type of player who gives you good at-bats wherever you play him. His fastball topped out at just 87 MPH and that was despite the fact that he didn’t have much projection remaining at 6'2", 195. His fastball did force him to hone his breaking pitches, but his curveball didn't have much shape in the high-60 's and his changeup was very inconsistent. Simply put, Woods was not much of a prospect. And then everything changed. Woods put in a ton of work in the last few months to build muscle and solidify his delivery, and suddenly his fastball touched 93 MPH as he threw those two no-hitters. But it wasn’t just the fastball. Woods added a mid-80's cutter to his repertoire with sharp late action, and high school hitters couldn't do anything with it. Woods had trouble keeping his stuff at that level the rest of the season and suffered through bouts of wildness after showing decent command previously, maybe because he knew the eyes of scouts were upon him. The reason for that is because the cutter believe it’s an unnecessary injury risk. But in the case of Woods, where his cutter had to be one of the major reasons they drafted him, you have to think they’ll make an exception. It’s extremely to evaluate Woods after just how variable his stuff and performance was, but if there’s any chance that Woods’ stuff could be better in short stints, the Rays would be more comfortable with his cutter in that role and he might even be able to move relatively quickly.
