It was generally conceded that this season would be a struggle at best after all those player losses over the winter. Yet, here they are -- just six percentage points behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East and gaining respect every day. They are fourth in the latest power rankings from ESPN.com -- they were 26th in the initial ranking, which coincided with the 1-8 start and the departure of Manny Ramirez. That brings up an odd but undeniably true point. While Super Sam has cooled at the plate since his other-worldly start, he still provides multiple intangibles and more than adequate defense in left field. Without Fuld, Johnny Damon would have been spending more time in the field instead of at Ramirez's designated hitter spot. Not only has Damon provided more offense at DH than Man-Ram likely would have, it also has spared his tender calf muscles from the artificial turf at Tropicana Field. Remember how Damon needed a break after just two games at the Trop because of calf soreness? That's not a problem now. He also has had a completely professional, positive attitude about moving to what essentially is the full-time DH role. He had gone to Durham after Dan Johnson secured the first base job in the spring. So what happens? After Johnson has struggled to hit, Kotchman made the most of his chance to play. He has has taken over at first and the Rays are significantly better for it. In fact, he has almost been too good. After hitting .217 with Seattle last season, including a horror show on-base percentage of .280, Kotchman is raking at .355 with an OBP of .437 right now for the Rays. That kind of production almost certainly can't last (his career numbers are .261/.329), so some sort of statistical correction is in order. But ride the wave while you can. Local native Kotchman has been just what the Rays needed, and his defense at first has been every bit the equal of the dearly departed Carlos Pena. They fattened up on the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox, winning nine of 11 against two scuffling teams. They swept a suddenly slumping Baltimore over the weekend. That's what good teams are supposed to do, though, and they did much of this work while Evan Longoria was out for a month with that oblique strain and other parts of the lineup were in transition. It has also helped that no one in the American League East ran off to the kind of start like the Rays had in 2010. The Yankees have sputtered a bit and we know about the struggles of the Boston Red Sox, although it's probably best not to look at them in the rear-view mirror at the moment. They have won three in a row to pull within a game of .500 and into third place in the division, and Carl Crawford (remember him?) is coming on like we knew he would. Not at all. Matt Joyce, for instance, has caught a nice wave in recent games and everyone will want to see if he can sustain that. Reid Brignac's struggles at the plate are getting worrisome. Kyle Farnsworth has been dandy as a closer, as has the rest of the bullpen.
