In the past six months, his stock has rose to the highest it’s been, and good thing for Sam as he recently turned 27 years old. Fuld is not an elite prospect, he’s more closer to a finished prospect, as in what you see is what you are going to get. Despite Sam’s size, he’s been long considered a future MLBer since his high school days due to well rounded fundamental yet hardnosed style of play. He plays the game the way you were taught as a kid in little league and the way you want your kids to play. Sam was born with Juvenile Diabetes, a condition that 40 years ago would/could have been a debilitating condition, just ask Ron Santo. The condition is life threatening and life altering, there is no escaping it, it’ s always there and it usually cuts a lifespan short 15 years. At an early age, his parents put Fuld in charge of monitoring his glucose levels and daily injections of insulin. One could say Sam learned responsibility and how to take care of his body at an early age and it payed dividends in baseball and more importantly in life. 这段讲Fuld从小生活 及生长环境(略过XD) During Fuld’s Junior season in High School, he tore his labrum in his throwing shoulder and needed surgery. Sam didn’t miss any playing time, rebounding quickly enough to play the regular high school season. In his Senior year of high school in 2000, Fuld was regarded as the third best prospect in the Northeast (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont) which doesn’t say too much due to the area being weak in competition. Still he showcased his skills in the Area Code Games against the best of the best of High School in front of a multitude of scouts. Scouts loved his well rounded fundamentals, his amazing coverage and routes in centerfield, his plate discipline, and his knowledge of doing what was best for the team. Even with his impressive showing, Fuld was not likely to be selected early due to a compiling of factors. Namely his commitment to Standford and with a professor as a father and a doctor as a mother, every scout knew education was going to be a huge road block. Also playing a role was his size, Fuld was below the “ideal” baseball frame at the time weighing 170lbs with a height of 5′10. If teams felt they could have drafted Fuld and signed him, he was probably looking at going somewhere between the second and fourth round of the 2000 draft. From early on, Fuld’s attributes started to show collegiately, showcasing skills at leading off (plus contact, plus eye, plus speed), covering massive ground in centerfield, showing a strong arm, and intelligent in-game mind. That helped earn him College World Series All Tournament Team along with first team All-American honors and a PAC-10 AllStar nod. But Fuld did all the little things as Stanford’s leadoff hitter and the Cubs took a flyer on him late in the 24th round and watched him during the summer in the Cape Cod League where he exploded and burned it up. From there it was known the Cubs were not going to sign him as they weren’t willing to lay the money down. Of course the same can be said for the fellow 2003 draftee, catcher Landon Powell whom the Cubs took in the 25th round. In Sam’s Senior year, he threw up his worst season of his college career with a line of .273/.388/.349/.737 including5 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR in 249 at bats. Yet he still batted leadoff for Stanford and helped them reach their fourth College World Series tourney in his fourth season. That helped Fuld become the all-time College World Series hits leader, surpassing former Cub Keith Moreland, for the record. It was just one of the many records Sam set his senior at Senior year at Stanford. Towards the end of the season, Fuld broke his right shoulder and tore his labrum. During that that stint, the Economics major Fuld worked for STATS Inc. as a statistician and in offseasons is working on his Masters in Statistics at Stanford. A leadoff hitter who consistently gets on base, has gap power, great basestealing technique and plays a great centerfield along with a line of .300/.377/.433/.810 in 443 at bats. He earned Baseball America’s classification as the Cubs’ Prospect with the best plate discipline, an honor he’d own for the following two seasons (06 and 07) as well, taking the title away from the MLB graduated Matt Murton. From there the Cubs put Fuld on the fast track, in 2006, he started the year off in High A Daytona but lost quite a few at bats due to a self inflictive injury in the field with a final line of .299/.378/.421./.799 in 354 at bats. Despite the lost at bats, the Cubs still promoted Fuld to Tennessee (AA) in 2007 to start the season. There he kept up his 2006 pace, with a line of .290/.372/.388/.760 in 335 at bats. He earned a callup to AAA for 14 games before he got a callup. Additionally, he finished second in hitting (.402) and third in runs scored (20). If your not familiar with the AFL, it’s known as a good testing ground for prospects either as a 25th man or fighting to prove they have the skills to start. Fuld impressed everybody, especially his teammates. Here’s what the Brewers top 2007 pick, Matt LaPorta, had to say about Sam, “The guy’s unbelievable. Just the way he goes about it everyday I think everyone learns something from his mental approach. And there are a lot of them watching right now.” Fuld deserved all the praise he was given as he was named the MVP of the league and awarded the Dernell Stenson Award which goes to the player who best exemplifies unselfishness, hardwork, and leadership. Fuld is the second Cub prospect to be awarded with the AFL MVP as former Cub Jason Dubois won it in 2003. Fuld also has the uncanny ability to repeatedly foul off pitches and make pitchers work, when he gets two strikes, he chokes up and tries plugging the ball, its not regularly that he strikesout. The results are seen in his double and triple marks. Sam never tries to take pitchers’ yard or making borderline pitches homeruns, Fuld knows his role as a tablesetter. Instead of going out and trying to drive runners in, he’d rather be the runner that needs driven in. Much of Sam’s hits are either on the ground or liners for basehits or sacrifices for the runner. With two strikes, Fuld goes old school, choking up and concentrating on just making contact. Santangelo Growing up through high school and college, Fuld was often compared to players of his similar size and position. Being under 5′10 with scrappy abilities and speed, his number one comparison was Lenny “Nailz” Dykstra. For a while, Nailz was MLB’s top leadoff hitter, as well as having the skill to work counts better than anyone else in baseball. Lenny already got a huge leg up on Fuld as Dykstra was in the MLB as a 22 year old. If Sam and his family weren’t so hellbent on going to college then it’s quite possible he would have been a big league fixture by his 22nd birthday. Yet money wasn’t the most important issue to Fuld and family, education was, as seen by Sam choosing Stanford over pro ball. 相比球员: F.P. At 27 years old, Sam has been pushed to the backburner in the Cubs’ starting OF rotation due to committed contracts and superstar talent much like Santangelo, who with the Expos had Henry Rod, Rondell White, Vlad, and etc ahead of him. F.P had a very similar size and plate skills as Sam as well as being surrounded by players with much higher ceilings than his own. Santangelo capitalized on his opportunities becoming a very solid 4th OF along with being a plus pinch hitter for good MLB run. Sam is a guy you want on your team, you want a team full of Fulds, players who give it their all day in and day out, show up and work hard in practice, along with staying late and arriving early everyday.
