General

Raptors will put call in to Dr. J Hall of famer keen on
front-office job 'He's got a lotof good qualities'
DOUG SMITH
SPORTS REPORTER
Julius Erving is on the Raptors' radar.
Minority owner Larry Tanenbaum confirmed last night that the team
will contact the hall of famer about a vacant front-office position,
a move that would immediately boost the profile of the sagging
franchise around the NBA.
"He's certainly someone we will be looking at," Tanenbaum said of
Erving, one of the league's top 50 players of all time and one of the
most electrifying athletes to play in the NBA.
Erving, a former executive vice-president of the Orlando Magic, has
been keenly interested in a position with the Raptors since the end of
the regular season, when the search for somebody to replace fired
general manager Glen Grunwald began in earnest.
And while he has no experience in judging talent or obtaining players,
his name still carries enormous weight around the league.
"He's got a lot of good qualities and he's someone we'll be looking at
for certain," said Tanenbaum.
Erving would need to be surrounded by a cadre of talent evaluators,
assistants and salary-cap experts should he land a job with Toronto but
Raptor sources say that is not a huge obstacle. The plan since
Grunwald's April 1 departure has been to beef up the basketball presence
in the team's front office after it had dwindled to next to nothing over
the last few years.
The Raptors originally began their search for a general manager by
casting a wide net around front offices throughout the league.
Interim GM Jack McCloskey and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment CEO
Richard Peddie whittled the original list of more than 50 down to five
men who got interviews. Second interviews were offered to two: Denver
assistant GM Jeff Weltman and Minnesota vice-president of player
personnel Rob Babcock.
Both have long NBA front-office backgrounds but neither wowed Tanenbaum
or the rest of the Raptor brass, who want a strong personality with a
vision and solid evaluation skills.
"There will be more interviews but we are happy with the calibre of
candidates we got," said Tanenbaum.
The biggest question about Erving is whether he will be able to
accurately judge young talent since he's never done it before. The
two-time NBA champion had little more than a ceremonial job with the
Magic and has never slogged through a season scouting colleges and
European leagues, as most NBA GMs do.
However, many Raptor officials think that, given the right support
staff, Erving could rely on keen assistants to help make decisions like
drafts and free-agent signings. And his mere presence would increase
players' respect for the front office and free agents' regard for the
Raptor organization.
There is no definite timetable for either a hiring or a conversation
with Erving.
