Texas Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his right hip and will miss the rest of the season. Lewis, 33, said Tuesday that he will have surgery at the end of the week or early next week. The recovery time is six to eight weeks before he can return to normal activities. The right-hander has dealt with the hip issue since the 2011 season, when he helped the Rangers reach their second consecutive World Series. Lewis hasn't pitched in the major leagues this season. He had right flexor tendon surgery in July 2012 and has been working his way back to the big league club. Lewis made a total of seven rehab starts, three of them in May before he was shut down for six weeks because of biceps tendinitis. He tried again in mid-July with four more rehab starts. His last start came on Aug. 3 for Triple-A Round Rock, when he pitched five innings and allowed two runs. The hip condition has created several issues during his rehab stints, from affecting his mechanics to his ability to get loose between innings. "It's something that I just deal with," Lewis said during a conference call. "I don't try to make it an issue. I just try to mask the pain as much as I can and for as long as I can and it just comes to the point that I feel like it's affecting my mechanics and not allowing me to compete at the big league level. "If I'm not able to do that, then I definitely feel like it's time to try to get it cleaned up and give myself the opportunity to where I can get outs at the big league level." There have been no issues with his arm or the area where he had surgery, Lewis said. The struggles have come with his fastball command and velocity, two keys in his arsenal. Lewis was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in his rehab starts. "I know going out there my arm feels great at times and if my mechanics aren't perfect because of the hip, it gets sore at certain times," Lewis said. "There are just inconsistencies that I was able to get through before, but now I'm just not able to get through it." The Rangers were hopeful Lewis could help the team in their playoff push this season, but the club does have depth in the rotation, with five solid starters and Opening Day starter Matt Harrison rehabbing and on his way back from the 60-day disabled list in a few weeks. That makes Lewis' situation a little easier to handle, general manager Jon Daniels said. "As much as we would love to have him back on the mound for us, we agree that he has to do what's best for his long-term health," Daniels said. "We certainly respect his decision." Lewis, who signed a one-year deal before the season, will be a free agent. The Rangers are open to Lewis returning in 2014, but the focus is first on the surgery, Daniels said. "The door is definitely open," Daniels said. "We think the world of this guy." Lewis, from Bakersfield, Calif, made it clear he wants to return to the team that drafted him in 1999. He won 26 games for the Rangers in 2010 and 2011 combined; in the two seasons' playoffs, he was 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA. "I'd love to pitch with the Rangers again," Lewis said. "This is my second home."
