ATLANTA -- The Rangers announced Friday that they have signed their top two picks from this year's First-Year Player Draft. Pitcher Kevin Matthews, the No. 33 overall pick in the draft, agreed to a signing bonus of $936,000. Outfielder Zach Cone, taken 37th in the compensation round, agreed to an $873,000 bonus. Both players are from Georgia and will be formally introduced at a press conference Saturday at Turner Field. Matthews will be assigned to the Arizona Rookie League Rangers while Cone will play for Class A Spokane in the short-season Northwest League. Matthews, 18, was 4-2 with a 1.68 ERA in 10 games for Richmond Hill (Ga.) High, just outside of Savannah. He pitched 42 innings and allowed 18 hits and 14 walks while striking out 95. He was the Region 3-AAA Pitcher of the Year as selected by the region's coaches. Cone hit .317 (175-for-552) with 28 doubles, 11 triples, 18 home runs and 106 RBIs in three seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs, appearing in 163 games with 136 starts. He committed just one error in 317 total outfield chances for a .997 fielding percentage, and was named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference All-Defensive team. After leading his team in batting average (.363), home runs (10) and RBIs (53) during his 2010 sophomore campaign, Cone was named a 2011 second-team preseason All-American by Baseball America. This past season, Cone hit .275 with four home runs, 35 RBIs and a .385 slugging percentage after going through a difficult time personally. He was involved in an on-field collision with teammate Johnathan Taylor on March 6.
