Hamilton injures shoulder on aggressive slides After racing into third, slugger tries to score on foul popout --------------------------------------------------------------- DETROIT -- Josh Hamilton left the Rangers' game against the Tigers on Tuesday with a strained right shoulder after just one at-bat. Texas isn't sure yet about the extent of the injury. Hamilton served as the designated hitter on Tuesday and injured the shoulder running the bases in the first inning. Hamilton actually had two headfirst slides during his trek around the bases. After Michael Young singled with one out off Tigers pitcher Brad Penny, Hamilton hit a line drive into the right-center-field gap that rolled to the wall. Young scored and Hamilton raced to third, sliding in headfirst with a triple. As he slid in, Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge fell over him. Nelson Cruz followed with a high foul popup near the Tigers dugout, and Inge and catcher Victor Martinez both went after it. Inge made the catch and nobody was covering home plate. Hamilton saw the opening and made a dash for the plate. But Martinez got there first, taking the throw from Inge on the run and applying the tag as Hamilton tried to slide around him, reaching out with his right arm trying to touch the plate. Hamilton was called out by home-plate umpire Tim Timmons. The Rangers announced in the second inning that Hamilton was coming out of the game.
