Will LF keep Josh Hamilton healthy? Hamilton移防左外野会让他保持健康吗? LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Rangers are trying to figure out how they can help keep their top slugger, MVP Josh Hamilton, healthy. They hope moving him to left field will mean more games on the field for a critical component of the lineup. Hamilton hit .359 last year and belted in 32 homers and 100 RBIs. But he missed most of the final month of the season after crashing into the wall at Target Field in Minnesota and fracturing two ribs. He returned for the postseason and played center in every playoff game, winning MVP honors in the ALCS. "We just want to take the wear and tear off him,” Washington said Monday. Hamilton is a big body. We want to try to keep him as healthy as we can and get him in as many ballgames as we possibly can. That doesn’t mean Hamilton won’t be in center, but if we can avoid and get one of our guys to take over there, that’s what we’d like to do.” Of course, this isn't a new plan. The Rangers wanted to do this prior to 2010. Julio Borbon showed up as the center fielder with Hamilton in left. But Borbon struggled to start the season and ended up getting reduced playing time. And Hamilton's defensive skills in center made him the best choice by far for the position. Washington is hoping Borbon will seize control of it and allow Hamilton to save his body some in left field. Hamilton's all-out style, though, is what makes him great and what contributes to his penchant for injuries. He's not going to change that style much, though he talked about dialing things down near the end of the season. By playing him in left, maybe that style won't get him into as much trouble in terms of walls and things as center did.
