Grant: Rusty Greer would be ideal replacement for Clint Hurdle as Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle left the Rangers to become Pittsburgh's manager: The loss is not insignificant. Hurdle faced a pretty big challenge in his first and only year as the Rangers hitting instructor. He had to first win the trust of a team that had been quite loyal to predecessor Rudy Jaramillo, then he had to convince them to subvert their egos in order to improve the team's overall offensive performance.He did a magnificent job of that, getting the club to buy into the notion of team offense above individual offense. Hurdle has presence and is dogged in his approach of that. Finding somebody with similar characteristics will be a difficult challenge, especially later in the coach-searching season than usual. Thad Bosley and Scott Coolbaugh make get interviews, but I've always thought Rusty Greer had those same characteristics that made Hurdle so good at his job. Is there risk in taking on a first-year coach? Sure, but more and more clubs are doing it.
