Rangers sign amateur free-agent righty Loux New addition was D-backs' No. 1 pick in the 2010 Draft The Rangers added another pitcher to their Minor League inventory when they signed amateur free agent Barret Loux to a contract on Friday. Loux was the D-backs' first-round pick -- sixth overall -- in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, but he failed his physical and an agreement with the club was never concluded. He has both shoulder and elbow issues, but the elbow is the bigger concern. But Loux, who pitched at Texas A&M, has been throwing in College Station, Texas, and been working out for different clubs. The Rangers liked the righty enough to sign him for $312,000. "Our guys liked him in the Draft last year," general manager Jon Daniels said. "Obviously, there is a reason why his situation played out the way it did. Ultimately, we were comfortable with it. "There is a risk with every player and every acquisition. We are happy to add another quality arm and a quality person to our organization. We are trying to add as much talent to the organization as possible." Loux returned to Texas A&M after failing his physical, but would have been ineligible under NCAA rules because he used an agent to negotiate his deal. Commissioner Bud Selig then ruled Loux could be a free agent and sign with another team, while the D-backs were given a compensation pick in next year's Draft. Loux, 6-foot-5, was named a Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I Third-Team All-American, First-Team All-Big 12 and was a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award after his junior season at Texas A&M. He went 11-2 with a 2.83 ERA (33 earned runs/105 innings), with one shutout and 136 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts) in 2010. Opponents batted .202 (78-for-387) against him.
