One offense is known for its speed, the other is decorated with sluggers, and both clubs are led by ace southpaws at the top of their rotations and solid closers in the back of their bullpens. 一支球队以他的速度出名,另一支以他们的长打有名,而且这两支球队王牌投手都是左投 ,而且都有很好的终结者。 Such is the case for this American League Division Series pinning the AL East champion Rays -- equipped with home-field advantage -- and the AL West champion Rangers. Tampa Bay won the season series, 4-2, and swept Texas in a three-game series at Tropicana Field. But that came in mid-August, and that was also the last time these two clubs met. 光芒因为战绩美联最佳而拥有所有主场优势。光芒在本年度的系列赛中取得4胜2败~~ On offense, the Rays get their power from Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena, but a lot of their runs are generated from the speed of Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton, among others. The Rangers can run, too, but they will slug you to death with the big bats of Josh Hamilton, Vladimir Guerrero, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler. 光芒的主炮有龙哥,Pena还有脚程很快的Crawford,B.J.Upton。 游骑兵队也会跑,但是他们的长打力将置对手於死地。包含Hammy,VG,MY,Nellie和Kinsler 。 It's speed versus power, East versus West, and in Game 1, it's David Price versus Cliff Lee. Here's a position-by-position breakdown: CATCHER Rays John Jaso: .263 BA, 5 HRs, 44 RBIs Kelly Shoppach: .196 BA, 5 HRs, 17 RBIs Rangers Bengie Molina: .249 BA, 5 HRs, 36 RBIs Matt Treanor: .211 BA, 5 HRs, 27 RBIs The Rays got an unexpected lift this season from Jaso, who wasn't even on the club's Opening Day roster and has actually hit leadoff for a good portion of the year. But heading into Sunday, Jaso's batting average -- which stood at .307 on June 6 -- was at just .197 since the start of September. Molina's numbers this season are slightly lower than Jaso's, and he definitely isn't capable of hitting at the top of the order. But Molina brings two Gold Gloves, three previous trips to the postseason, 13 seasons of Major League experience and a solid reputation for his work with pitchers. EDGE: Tied FIRST BASE Rays Carlos Pena: .196 BA, 28 HRs, 84 RBIs Dan Johnson: .198 BA, 7 HRs, 23 RBIs Rangers Mitch Moreland: .255 BA, 9 HRs, 25 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Pena's batting average may be sitting below the Mendoza Line, but he's a power source from first base the Rangers simply do not have. Pena is a home run threat every time he steps to the plate, but can he be the type of threat that forces the Rangers to pitch to No. 4 hitter Evan Longoria? It's a fair question, considering Pena's awful month and the fact he's a .174 hitter against Texas this season. The Rangers were hoping to add more punch at first by acquiring Cantu from the Marlins at the Trade Deadline, but he has struggled a bit in his new home. He and the lefty-hitting Moreland now form somewhat of a platoon. Chris Davis could see some action here, too. EDGE: Rays SECOND BASE Rays Sean Rodriguez: .251 BA, 9 HRs, 40 RBIs, 13 SB Reid Brignac: .256 BA, 8 HRs, 45 RBIs Rangers Ian Kinsler: .286 BA, 9 HRs, 45 RBIs, 15 SB Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs Kinsler missed the entire month of August with a groin strain and has struggled since his return. But he's still the guy who smashed 31 homers last year. Kinsler could make an impact in this series, even though he isn't one of the Rangers' main run producers at this point. Rodriguez has been a pleasant addition to the Rays since he won a job out of Spring Training. But he doesn't pack the punch of Kinsler. EDGE: Rangers SHORTSTOP Rays Jason Bartlett: .254 BA, 4 HRs, 47 RBIs Reid Brignac: .256 BA, 8 HRs, 45 RBIs Rangers Elvis Andrus: .265 BA, 0 HRs, 35 RBIs, 32 SB Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs Before second-half inconsistencies at the plate, Andrus was having the best season of any shortstop in the AL. Still, the young Venezuelan has blazing speed, is one of the best fielders at his position, and he hits well enough. Bartlett, who hit .320 last year and .286 the year before that, has had a down year at the plate. EDGE: Rangers THIRD BASE Rays Evan Longoria: .294 BA, 22 HRs, 104 RBIs Willy Aybar: .230 BA, 6 HRs, 43 RBIs Rangers Michael Young: .284 BA, 21 HRs, 91 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Longoria against Young is one of the tightest head-to-head matchups in this series. Longoria has turned in a career-high batting average and the type of season that should garner him some votes for the AL Most Valuable Player Award. Young has been solid once again, too. But Longoria -- batting .417 with two homers and 10 RBIs -- has terrorized the Rangers this season, while Young -- hitting .118 with two RBIs -- has struggled against the Rays. Longoria hasn't played since Sept. 23 because of a sore left quad, but the Rays have called it a precautionary move, and manager Joe Maddon said his third baseman is "doing great." EDGE: Rays OUTFIELD Rays Carl Crawford: .307 BA, 19 HRs, 90 RBIs, 47 SB B.J. Upton: .237 BA, 18 HRs, 62 RBIs, 42 SB Ben Zobrist: .238 BA, 10 HRs, 75 RBIs, 24 SB Matt Joyce: .241 BA, 10 HRs, 40 RBIs Desmond Jennings: .190 BA, 0 HRs, 2 RBIs Rangers Josh Hamilton: .360 BA, 32 HRs, 100 RBIs, 1.048 OPS Julio Borbon: .276 BA, 3 HRs, 42 RBIs, 15 SB Nelson Cruz: .318 BA, 22 HRs, 78 RBIs, 17 SB Vladimir Guerrero: .300 BA, 29 HRs, 115 RBIs David Murphy: .291 BA, 12 HRs, 65 RBIs, 14 SB Jeff Francoeur: .249 BA, 13 HRs, 65 RBIs This is the position that really separates the Rays and Rangers. Texas is the power-hitting club with outfield run producers like Hamilton and Cruz, while Tampa Bay kills you with speed from the likes of Crawford and Upton. The fact Hamilton was included in that sentence is a huge sigh of relief for Rangers fans. The AL MVP candidate missed nearly a month with two cracked ribs, but he returned on Friday and said he's "seeing the ball well." It goes without say that Hamilton's production will be critical for the Rangers in this series. With him, Texas' trio of Hamilton, Cruz and -- depending on matchups, either Borbon, Francoeur or Murphy -- is pretty scary, and perhaps just a smidge better than Crawford-Upton-Zobrist. EDGE: Rangers DESIGNATED HITTER Rays Willy Aybar: .230 BA, 6 HRs, 43 RBIs Matt Joyce: .241 BA, 10 HRs, 40 RBIs Rangers Vladimir Guerrero: .300 BA, 29 HRs, 115 RBIs David Murphy: .291 BA, 12 HRs, 65 RBIs, 14 SB Guerrero's presence in the middle of the order is yet another reason why the Rangers feature one of the most potent offenses in the league. Guerrero will finish his 15th season with his highest RBI total since 2007 and his most home runs since '06. He's a career .286 hitter in 29 playoff games, is coming off batting .323 in September and has hit .304 in six games against the Rays. EDGE: Rangers STARTING PITCHERS Rays David Price: 19-6, 2.72 ERA Matt Garza: 15-10, 3.91 ERA James Shields: 13-15, 5.18 ERA Jeff Niemann: 12-8, 4.07 ERA Wade Davis: 12-10, 4.07 ERA Rangers Cliff Lee: 12-9, 3.18 ERA C.J. Wilson: 13-8, 3.35 ERA Colby Lewis: 12-13, 3.72 ERA Tommy Hunter: 13-4, 3.73 ERA Derek Holland: 3-4, 4.08 ERA Each team has a premier left-hander at the top of its rotation, but varying depth behind him. The matchup between likely Rays starter Price and Lee in Game 1 is a must-watch. Behind Lee, the Rangers have had solid seasons from Wilson, Lewis and Hunter. Behind Price, the Rays got a good year from Garza, but Shields, Niemann and Davis have been rather inconsistent. Heading into Sunday, Rays starters ranked third in the league in ERA but had posted a 4.80 mark since the start of September. Rangers starters ranked seventh in the league and had posted a 4.38 ERA since Sept. 1. Because of Shields' struggles, the Rays lack a go-to No. 3 starter at the moment. That gives a slight edge to Texas. EDGE: Rangers MIDDLE RELIEVERS Rays Grant Balfour: 2.28 ERA, 57 G Joaquin Benoit: 1.34 ERA, 63 G Randy Choate: 4.23 ERA, 85 G Lance Cormier: 3.92 ERA, 60 G Jeremy Hellickson: 3.47 ERA, 10 G (4 GS) Chad Qualls: 7.32 ERA, 70 G Andy Sonnanstine: 4.41, 41 G (4 GS) Dan Wheeler: 3.35 ERA, 64 G Rangers Scott Feldman: 5.48 ERA, 29 G (22 GS) Rich Harden: 5.58 ERA, 20 G (18 GS) Matt Harrison: 4.71 ERA, 37 G (6 GS) Dustin Nippert: 4.29 ERA, 38 G (2 GS) Darren O'Day: 2.03 ERA, 72 G Alexi Ogando: 1.30 ERA, 44 Darren Oliver: 2.48 ERA, 64 G Chris Ray: 3.72 ERA, 63 G(注:本文章资料有误~Ray已被交易至巨人队) You're looking at two of the AL's best bullpens -- at least ERA-wise -- right here. The Rangers are No. 1 in the league, and the Rays are slightly behind at No. 3. Texas' relief corps is equipped with everything you need -- flame-throwers, lefty specialists and gritty veterans who aren't fazed by even the most pressure-packed playoff moments. The Rays have their share of that, too, but the Rangers' bridge to their closer seems more potent. Heading into Sunday, Texas was 71-12 when leading after six. EDGE: Rangers CLOSERS Rays Rafael Soriano: 1.73 ERA, 45 SV, 3 BS Rangers Neftali Feliz: 2.73 ERA, 0.880 WHIP, 40 SV, 3 BS It's hard to get to the playoffs without stability at the closer spot, and both of these teams have it. The Rangers have a homegrown guy in Feliz, who has made a splash in his first year as a Major League ninth-inning man. The Rays went out and got theirs and hit it big, as Soriano has proven to be one of the biggest offseason pickups in the Majors. Perhaps a spectacular 2010 season may up his price tag to the point where the Rays can't afford him next year. But for now, they'll enjoy a postseason ride with Soriano, whose numbers and experience give him the slight edge over the Rangers' youngster. EDGE: Rays BENCH Rays Kelly Shoppach: .196 BA, 5 HRs, 17 RBIs Dan Johnson: .198 BA, 7 HRs, 23 RBIs Reid Brignac: .256 BA, 8 HRs, 45 RBIs Matt Joyce: .241 BA, 10 HRs, 40 RBIs Desmond Jennings: .190 BA, 0 HRs, 2 RBIs Rangers Matt Treanor: .211 BA, 5 HRs, 27 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs David Murphy: .291 BA, 12 HRs, 65 RBIs, 14 SB Jeff Francoeur: .249 BA, 13 HRs, 65 RBIs After acquiring Lee in one of the biggest in-season acquisitions, the Rangers went to work on addressing their bench with the addition of guys like Cantu, Francoeur and Cristian Guzman. Their depth in the outfield gives manager Ron Washington options for a third player after Hamilton and Cruz. And their bench has a lot more valuable experience than that of the Rays. EDGE: Rangers COACHES Rays Manager: Joe Maddon Bench coach: Dave Martinez Hitting coach: Derek Shelton Pitching coach: Jim Hickey Third-base coach: Tom Foley First-base coach: George Hendrick Rangers Manager: Ron Washington Bench coach: Jackie Moore Hitting coach: Clint Hurdle Pitching coach: Mike Maddux Third-base coach: Dave Anderson First-base coach: Gary Pettis This is one of the few areas where experience will favor the Rays. Maddon was the 2008 AL Manager of the Year, and he guided his team to the World Series that season. This will be Washington's first time managing in the playoffs. EDGE: Rays FANS Rays: Domed stadium, cowbells, catwalks. Rangers: Texas heat, hitter-friendly dimensions, the "Claw" and "Antlers." The Rays didn't necessarily have packed houses when it was clinching time recently, but you can bet Tropicana Field will be packed for the team's second trip to the postseason. Add cowbells or whatever gadgets the promotional staff comes up with and put them in a dome that amplifies noise like nothing else, and you will have one of the loudest buildings in the ALDS. But Texas' fan base is more established -- more than 30,000 a game came out to watch the Rangers this season -- and the hitter-friendly confines at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington tailor to Texas' power-packed lineup perfectly.
