Hamilton likely to miss another week Rangers outfielder receives another injection in his back By T. R. Sullivan / MLB.com 09/11/09 6:29 PM ET ARLINGTON -- The Rangers will likely have to go without outfielder Josh Hamilton for at least another week before he is able to return to the lineup. Hamilton is sidelined with a pinched nerve in his lower back, a diagnosis that was confirmed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles on Friday. Hamilton, who has not played since Sept. 2, received another anti-inflammatory injection in the back on Friday. It's the third one that Hamilton has received in the past 10 days. The second injection on Monday did much to alleviate the pain and inflammation and doctors are hoping the third injection will clear up the problem for good. But Watkins and the Rangers medical staff have recommended that Hamilton remain sidelined for at least another week before he tries to play again. That means he will miss the three-game series with the Mariners this weekend at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and a three-game series with the Athletics that starts here on Monday. The Rangers begin a three-game series with the Angels at home next Friday and that would likely be the earliest that Hamilton returns. "The doctor said seven days and we'll go from there," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "Going from what the doctor said; he felt by continuing his core program and strengthening his back, Josh could be back in a week or so. But at this point of the season, we will wait until he gets back out on the field before we predict anything." The Rangers could get Michael Young back before Hamilton. Young remains sidelined with a strained left hamstring but the Rangers continue to be encouraged by the progress he is making. Young, in addition to his regular treatment and rehab work, has been jogging in the outfield and on Friday he resumed swinging a bat in the indoor batting cage. The Rangers are cautiously optimistic Young will be back in the lineup when the Angels come to town. Manager Ron Washington suggested Young might be able to be used at designated hitter by then. Asked if Young could be back in the lineup before Hamilton, Daniels said, "I wouldn't be surprised." Omar Vizquel and Esteban German have been filling in for Young at third base during his absence. But Vizquel was absent as well on Friday. He was given permission to be away from the team on a personal matter but is expected to be back on Saturday. German started at third base on Friday. T.R.
