Club officials said chances are slim that the Rangers would acquire Toronto's Roy Halladay or Cleveland's Cliff Lee, both former Cy Young Award winners. Toronto has asked for three of the Rangers' top prospects, including left-hander Derek Holland. The Rangers balked at that, as well as the $6 million Halladay would be owed the rest of the season. Lee remains available, but even his remaining salary of just over $2 million seems too steep to be added to the payroll. Potential trade partners have been made aware of the Rangers' financial limitations. "It's a different environment than we've dealt with in the past," Daniels said. "We haven't made any secret of that. It's unlikely you will see us adding any significant amount of money. It doesn't mean that we can't improve the club. It just makes it more challenging." The Rangers aren't likely to add a hitter, Daniels said.
