Mathis made his first start of the season on June 9 against the Blue Jays, when he allowed four earned runs over five innings against the Blue Jays. He has a 0-1 record with a 1.64 ERA over 22 innings this season. Padilla's condition has improved since his positive test on Friday but the Rangers wanted to push him back. He did his normal running and throwing between starts leading up to Tuesday. Rangers manager Ron Washington thought on Monday that Padilla was strong enough to make Tuesday's start but wasn't certain how long his pitcher would be able to last as he was coming off his illness.
