Texas is looking for a utility infielder to replace Mark DeRosa, but the club doesn't have a lot of playing time to offer. Both shortstop Michael Young and first baseman Mark Teixeira played in 162 games last year. The Rangers are looking at depth behind third baseman Hank Blalock, who is coming off shoulder surgery. But manager Ron Washington said he is planning on playing Blalock every day at third base if he is healthy, rather than sitting him against some left-handed pitchers. "That's what Hank needs," Washington said last month. "I don't want Hank coming around thinking, looking over his shoulder and wondering if he's going to play tomorrow. He's too talented for that." Loretta was an All-Star for the San Diego Padres in 2004 and again for the Boston Red Sox in 2006, when he batted .285 in 155 games and 635 at-bats. He batted .335 with 108 runs scored in 2004 for the Padres. The Rangers were told that Loretta was going to sign with another team that would give him more playing time. Right now, Drew Meyer is the leading candidate on the 40-man roster to be the Rangers' utility infielder. Joaquin Arias is expected to play shortstop every day at Triple-A Oklahoma. The Rangers continue to have discussions with free-agent pitcher Mark Mulder, but they don't expect a resolution to that situation until next week.
