Rangers' Matsuzaka bid in doubt
时间Wed Nov 15 08:43:01 2006
ARLINGTON -- Major League Baseball has not yet officially announced who has
won the rights to negotiate with Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.
But the Rangers are dealing with the understanding that their bid of what
sources said was $27 million is going to fall short. All indications are that
the Boston Red Sox have won the negotiating rights.
The Rangers prepare to move on, but their approach to Matsuzaka reflects
their philosophy for the offseason: They will take a cautious approach to
potential free agents, but will also be aggressive if they find the right
player interested in coming to Texas.
"The payroll has always been player-specific," Rangers owner Tom Hicks said.
"There's nothing riskier than expensive long-term contracts for pitchers. You
have to make sure you get the right guy, but starting pitching is still a
priority for us.
"There's a lot of wasted money out there for pitchers -- including our own --
who don't perform or get hurt. People end up getting stuck with dead money."
The Rangers gave Chan Ho Park a five-year, $65 million contract and quickly
came to regret it. But they also gave Kevin Millwood a five-year, $60 million
deal and were quite satisfied after he went 16-12 with a 4.52 ERA in his
first season with the Rangers.
The Rangers are expected to make a serious run at left-handed pitcher Barry
Zito, who has already told new manager Ron Washington that he would be
interested in coming to Texas. Right-hander Jeff Suppan and left-hander Ted
Lilly are also on the Rangers' list. They are likely to stay away from
right-hander Jason Schmidt because of concerns about his health.
Jason Schmidt
The Rangers also have interest in re-signing Vicente Padilla, but club
officials have made it clear his asking price is way too high for them right
now.
"We're comfortable investing in a pitcher like Kevin Millwood," Hicks said.
"But we'd like to avoid the traps that might be out there with pitchers that
are too risky."

areas from $5 in the lower infield to $2 in some other sections.
