Wakamatsu was the fifth and final candidate to interview for the job that became open when Buck Showalter was dismissed at the end of the season. Wakamatsu and Hillman are the only two who have met with Hicks. A's third-base coach Ron Washington, Mets third-base coach Manny Acta and Phillies Triple-A manager John Russell were the first three candidates to interview but did not meet with Hicks. Wakamatsu spent all afternoon and early into the evening with both Daniels and Hicks. "I'm exhausted," Wakamatsu said Wednesday evening. "I thought it went well. I waited awhile to get quite a few things off my chest. Like I was joking earlier, they've been awfully thorough, but I have a lot of respect for J.D. and Mr. Hicks. Hillman interviewed with the Athletics on Wednesday and is scheduled to meet with the San Diego Padres on Thursday. Acta has interviewed with the Nationals, while Russell is expected to interview with them in the near future. Washington interviewed with the Athletics on Tuesday and Acta is also a candidate with them as well. The Athletics have permission to speak to Wakamatsu but have not scheduled an interview.
