Rick Bauer pitched the eighth and was the last pitcher Showalter was willing
to use. When Matt Stairs, the first baseman who was acquired earlier in the
day from Kansas City, reported to the Metrodome late in the game, the first
thing Showalter asked him was if he could pitch.
Otherwise, it would have been Brad Wilkerson, who pitched at the University
of Florida.
