Gerald Laird - C - Age 24 - ETA: July 2004 .260/.344/.429, 9 HR, 42 RBI, 61/37 K/BB, 9 SB in 338 AB for Triple-A Oklahoma .273/.360/.432, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 11/5 K/BB, 0 SB in 44 AB for Texas He’s not much of a fantasy prospect, but Laird is a first-rate defensive catcher with a decent enough bat to make it as a regular. Playing in Texas could allow him to bat .260 with a dozen homers per season. Also, it’s worth noting that he’s stolen 8-10 bases in each of his five minor league seasons. Still, it’s his glove that will get Laird to the majors. In a fair competition, he’d beat out Einar Diaz to become a regular on Opening Day. However, he’ll probably have to head back to Triple-A for at least a couple of months before he gets his shot. 6. Ben Kozlowski - LHP - Age 23 - ETA: June 2005 The Rangers’ top pitching prospect a year ago, Kozlowski underwent Tommy John surgery in June. If he gets back his mid-90s fastball and curveball , he has about as much upside as Dominguez. 7. Anthony Webster - OF - Age 20 - ETA: 2007 Webster, who hit .352/.448/.418 in Rookie ball in 2002, batted .286 with 3 HR , 42 RBI, 66/31 K/BB and 24 SB in 437 AB between two low Single-A teams last season. He’s still a potential regular in center field, but he’s at least three years away. 8. Vince Sinisi - OF - Age 22 - ETA: 2007 Sinisi was considered a first-round talent, but he slipped to the second round of the 2003 draft because of his expected bonus demands. The Rangers signed him and should have themselves a quality hitter. They’ll use him in either left or right. 9. Drew Meyer - SS/OF - Age 22 - ETA: 2006 Meyer, the 10th overall pick in the 2002 draft, will be the next Rangers prospect to undergo the transformation from middle infielder to center fielder. There are still some doubts about his bat, but Meyer has the talent to be a quality all-around player. 10. Josh Rupe - RHP - Age 21 - ETA: 2006 Picked up from the White Sox along with Webster for Carl Everett, Rupe went 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA, 79 H and 92/43 K/BB in 93 1/3 IP while playing for the same low Single-A clubs that Webster did last season.
