Report: Palace of Auburn Hills may eliminate half of its luxury suites
The Sports Business Journal reports that the Palace of Auburn Hills may cut
the number of suites to 80 from 178, converting them into a restaurant,
social media gathering sites and a sports hall of fame.
Auburn Hills-based Palace Sports and Entertainment LCC may slash the number
of suites of The Palace of Auburn Hills to 80 skyboxes from the current 178,
according to a new report.
The plan would be to convert suite space on the penthouse level of the
Detroit Pistons' home into a restaurant, social media gathering sites and a
sports hall of fame, the Sports Business Journal reported.
The suites targeted are on the highest level at The Palace, typically leased
on a game-by-game basis and difficult to sell, the report said.
After 11 home games this season, the struggling Pistons (4-18) are averaging
12,619 fans a game, worst in the 30-team National Basketball Association.
No final determination has been made on whether the plan will go ahead or how
much it would cost, according to the story.
"We just have too much (suite) inventory. Changing those suites will be rated
against numerous capital-intense projects we are reviewing," Palace President
Dennis Mannion told the sports industry publication.
A message was left for Palace management.
The plan comes as new PS&E and Pistons owner Tom Gores continues to remake
the operation.
Gores, a private equity billionaire, has replaced much of PS&E's upper
management with his own hires. He bought the team, venue and management
company in June for $325 million.
Last week, Forbes put a $332 million value on the Pistons in its newest
annual team valuations, which represents a one-year decline of 8 percent. The
team is the 17th-most-valuable franchise in the NBA, and the financial news
website blamed the team's poor play and the region's recession economy for
the decline in value.
The team had operating income of $9.7 million on revenue of $141 million last
year, compared with $31.8 million and $147 million the season prior, Forbes
said.
Gores and his staff look to boost all those numbers.
There has been previously reported discussion of The Palace possibly selling
naming rights. The Los Angeles-based sports marketing and talent management
firm Wasserman Media Group was hired by the Palace to find new revenue
opportunities at the venue, and naming rights is a possibility, although
management has downplayed that.
Former Pistons and PS&E owner Bill Davidson, whose 2009 death led to the
team's sale, built the 22,076-seat Palace in 1988 for $90 million out of his
own pocket. Davidson spent an additional $112.5 million in subsequent
renovations of the arena but never wanted to sell the naming rights.
Gores has spent about $9 million on renovations at The Palace, including an
improved locker room; a new lounge, saunas and spas for the players; new
dressing rooms for performers; and a new floor on the basketball court with a
new overhead lighting system.
A committee of executives from Gores' Los Angeles-based Platinum Equity LLC
oversees the business operations of PS&E, which operates The Palace.
