Reporters and TV cameras are a daily part of any professional coach's life. The
media is there before and after practice and games, and even sometimes on off
days.
Consequently, most coaches are happy to get away from the media.
But some, such as former Pistons coach Rick Carlisle and former Lions coach
Steve Mariucci, take another tack between coaching gigs: they join the media.
Carlisle was fired by the Indiana Pacers last spring. He quickly made the
transition into being an ESPN NBA studio analyst for the 2007 playoffs, and has
continued this season in that capacity.
I caught up with Carlisle to see how he's adapting to life as a member of the
media:
Q: How are things going with ESPN?
A: I'm enjoying it. It's obviously been a great opportunity. I'm around a lot
of good people that are really helping me learn what to do.
Q: You did TV work, with the Sonics, before you came to the Pistons. Is that
experience helpful for what you're doing now?
A: It is different. My ESPN work is predominantly in the studio. In Seattle, I
was doing a simulcast on TV and radio there. I learned things like how to talk
into the camera, broadcast fundamentals. You need to be very concise and
organized in your thoughts and delivery. You can't over-prepare, that's
actually a bad thing. You need to be ready for a quick hit, and know what you
want to say.
Q: In your heart, you're still a basketball coach -- or is TV your future?
A: I still have great interest in basketball and coaching, but I've made a
commitment to doing this at ESPN to the best of my ability this year. I've
really enjoyed this year, being away from coaching. It gives you a different
spatial perspective. I'm getting to go around the country, talk to a lot of
friends in the profession, and just learn more about the game.
Being away from the intimacy of coaching reminds you that you've got to enjoy
it when you're doing it. You notice that you don't see a lot of happy
coaches' faces in the NBA. That kind of makes you appreciate having fun when
you coach, and recommits you to the fact it's a game -- it's got to be fun.
Q: How else have you used your time?
A: It's been amazing, really, because of my 3 1/2 year old daughter (Abby).
It's such a precious time. I've been able to create a stronger bond with her.
Time is just flying by with her growing up, I want to slow it down.
Q: How do you see the Pistons and the Eastern Conference shaping up?
A: I'm staying the same since before the season started: I picked the Pistons
to come out of the East. Don't get me wrong, I love what Boston has done. But
the "Detroit Four" -- Chauncey (Billups), Rip (Hamilton), Tayshaun (Prince) and
Rasheed (Wallace) -- are going to make the difference. It's a dynamic group
with great experience, and that's why I have a strong belief they're coming out
of the East. I have special feelings about three of those guys. (Carlisle
coached Billups, Hamilton and Prince.)
Q: What comes to mind about your time in Detroit?
A: That playoff run in 2003, how our guys came back from a 3-1 deficit to
Orlando. That run to the conference finals was one of the great experiences of
my life.
I have great feelings about Detroit, everybody was very cordial and warm to me.
I hope Detroit's fans understand what a special group these Pistons are as
players and people. There are only a handful of teams that have the caliber of
players and people, and Joe Dumars has everything to do with that.
