Gerstner / The Detroit News CLEVELAND -- Pistons coach Flip Saunders wanted Thursday to give rookie guards Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo good minutes against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He got his wish as the Pistons went into overtime. School was in session, and the preseason verdict was: Sometimes they looked good, sometimes they looked really bad. The bottom line -- the rookies learned a lot in the Cavaliers' 96-90 victory over the Pistons. "I think all of (us) realized how important each possession is," said Afflalo, who had 12 points and four turnovers in 27 minutes. "Especially in overtime games. We let it get away from us." The starters from both teams played light minutes, leaving the game up to the reserves. The reserves/rookies shift blew an 18-point lead in the second half but got it back near the end of the fourth, only to have the Cavaliers tie the game with .4 seconds left to force overtime. Stuckey and Afflalo combined to score 11 of the Pistons' 17 in the fourth quarter. But they also committed three turnovers. The Pistons' offense stalled in the second half, not scoring a field goal from 7:16 in the third until 7:35 in the fourth. Stuckey finished with 10 points, five turnovers and three steals in nearly 29 minutes. While Saunders stuck with the rookies it was time to learn some lessons. "We got into a situation where they're going to have to learn how to play with a lead," Saunders said. "And they have to learn how to tighten things up a little bit. We kind of let them play a little bit, let them see as far as what they can do out there on their own. "Sometimes, in order to learn how to succeed, you have to fail. This is what the exhibition is about." The Pistons' starters played effectively, spending most of the second half cheering and counseling the younger players. "They did some good things, but they're just learning that every team plays different," said Chauncey Billups, who had 12 points and six assists in 24 minutes. 'Sheed comes to life There was a little spice to an otherwise sleep-inducing exhibition, as Rasheed Wallace 's mouth came to life in the third. He jawed with James and Drew Gooden . Wallace picked up five fouls in the quarter as well as a technical. Wallace and Gooden were hit with matching technicals for mouthing off at the free-throw line. James aggressively blocked Wallace's shot at 4:32. Next trip down the floor, Wallace picked up another personal foul and stared into the crowd like an angry prizefighter. Saunders then gave Wallace a seat. On his way to the bench, Wallace waved his right hand dismissively at the small but booing crowd. He also yelled at James, who was standing far down on the other end of the floor. James responded to Wallace, and that was the end of the drama. "That's how we do it," Wallace said, after the game. "Young punks (Gooden) really thinking they did something. So now we're going to have to put those young-ass cats in their place. He got a little out of control with his mouth, that's all. The normal stuff." Maxiell still improving Third-year forward Jason Maxiell has had his moments. Snatching down big rebounds. Smacking away shots. And throwing down thunderous dunks. Many see it as time for him to move into a significant role in the Pistons' line up. But first, Saunders needs to see something: consistency. "There's a catch-22: I know some people say, is he a starter?" Saunders asked. "The group he's likely going to be on the floor with, Stuckey, and those energy-type of guys, he fits perfectly with that right now. You always want to bring somebody in the game that can change the game right away, and he has the ability to do that."
