GROWING UP
I was born in Atlanta on August 9, 1981. I have a twin brother (named Jonas),
two other brothers (named Raheem and Marcus) and a sister (named Katasa).
Many people ask me if it was strange to grow up with a twin brother. We had a
very normal childhood. I have to say that we can definitely feel each other’s
pain though. Once Jonas fell of his bike and hit his head – he wasn’t crying
but I was at the same time! Later when Jonas was playing college ball at
Georgia, he dislocated his finger very badly. At the very same time, I started
feeling pain in my finger for no reason. We weren’t very mischievous twins
though – well, we did switch classes once in 8th grade and didn’t get caught!
Also, when we were 13 or 14 years old, Jonas couldn’t play basketball for his
city team because he was sick. His team had made it all the way to the
Championship and I didn’t want them to lose. So, I stepped in and pretended to
be him! Within the first three minutes, they realized that I wasn’t Jonas and
was disqualified.
Growing up Atlanta was great. I had a neighborhood full of older and wiser
people who were very influential on me. I grew up in a very religious family so
there wasn’t too much non-sense going on in our house.
I remember first playing basketball at age six in first grade. My first
position was guard/forward. All of my siblings played basketball. Katasa played
college basketball at the College of Charleston. Raheem played at South
Carolina State. Marcus played at Fort Valley State. Jonas and I played at
Western Carolina before transferring to play at Georgia. Marcus actually had a
dual scholarship in basketball and track. My cousin Steve (Luke) played
professional football for the Green Bay Packers.
我的表兄弟Steve(Luke)效力於职

HIGH SCHOOL
I’ve always wanted to either play basketball, coach basketball or become a
police officer. I had four of the best years of my life during high school at
Frederick Douglas High. I really enjoyed that time. I met some great friends
and had great experiences. I think I got my first dunk in high school (ninth
grade). I hit a growth spurt between 10th and 12th grade. The biggest spurt
was during the summer between 10th and 11th grade. I grew almost 6 inches!
I played a lot of AAU basketball during high school. My AAU experience helped
to develop who I am as a person and as a basketball player. I played during my
Junior and Senior years of high school and it gave me another opportunity to
meet and compete against some great people.

COLLEGE
I chose to attend Western Carolina because of the bond that I had with my
brother. We could have gone to different schools but only three offered
scholarships together and one was WC. Jonas and I both decided to transfer from
WC and attend Georgia after our first year because we wanted to be closer to
home. The most difficult part of the transfer was not being able to play
basketball for the first three months there (due to NCAA regulations). Looking
back, there’s nothing I would’ve done differently though. I majored in Child
and Family Development because I wanted to make a difference in children’s
lives. I’m very passionate about helping kids and wanted to learn from my
experiences and help other kids along as well.
My most memorable college games came at Georgia. One very memorable game was my
first ever NCAA Tournament game, I scored 32 points! Then in my last home game
at Georgia, we were playing the Florida Gators (who were ranked 3rd in the
country) and were down 1 point with 10 seconds to play. I hit a turnaround
jumper to win the game! It was incredible!

NBA Draft
NBA选秀会
I trained really hard for the NBA Draft. I had hernia surgery the same year
that I was drafted and had to work extra hard to be ready. I was a big Hawks
fan (since I grew up in Atlanta) and initially wanted to play for them but was
ecstatic when the Wizards drafted me! I was too excited to even cry tears of
joy!
I was drafted right where I was expected but the whole process was nerve
wrecking because nothing is guaranteed. You never know what can change or what
the teams are thinking. My entire family and my high school coach (Jesse Bonner
) accompanied me to the draft. The only advice I can give to young players on
the verge of being drafted is to “relish every moment of it because there will
never be another time in your life when you are going to get that experience.”
It’s great because somebody actually wants you. The fact that you are wanted
is a great feeling!
(Jesse Bonner
