Dumars: We lost our edge and Cleveland took advantage of that. They had incredible efforts from LeBron James, and key guys stepping up and having great games. So it was a combination of us k Ford: Your philosophy is a "no-star" approach. Is there something about having a superstar that is greater than having a great starting five? Dumars: There's something to having a superstar on your team - when he can elevate his game and make the other guys better. But we didn't lose the series because of LeBron James. We lost because of the other guys. You expect LeBron to have big games, but when the other players have huge games as well, it makes it really tough. Ford: Have you ever seen a performance - 29 of his team's last 30 points - like LeBron's in Game 5? Dumars: No, not to that degree. Obviously, I played against Michael Jordan and saw some dominating performances. But not where he scored, basically, 29 of 30 points. Ford: What was your reaction sitting there watching your team, and watching LeBron do what he was doing? Dumars: It was a sickening feeling in my stomach. It's tough to have to sit there and watch that. It was disappointing that we couldn't stop LeBron. Ford: Was there any temptation to suit up and give LeBron a couple hard fouls. Dumars: None whatsoever. I'd last about five seconds and get one hard foul. (laughs) My mentality is that you don't let that (type of performance) happen. You have to stop that at all costs, and it didn't happen. Ford: Is that on Flip Saunders, or is that on the players? Dumars: That's on everyone down on that bench. I never separate coaches and players. It's a collective effort, win or lose. Somehow you stop that. Ford: The Pistons' effort was up and down depending on the scenario. How do you address that...get back that "eye of the tiger"? Dumars: The only way I know you do it is by drawing a line. Either you keep that edge and you continue here, or you keep fluctuating, and I make some changes. It's not like a really confusing situation to me. Either the guys that stay here keep that edge or the ones who don't, we're going to move on. I don't think you have to go to counseling, to sit down with somebody, to talk about how you get your edge back. Either you step out on the floor and you have it, or you don't. And if you can't sustain it for two, three, four, five games in a row, then I know you're not the person for my team because I'm not going to accept anything less than that. I'm not going to accept this roller coaster, up-and-down, play good for two good games, lull for two or three. I have no patience for that, Chad, so I refuse to sit and analyze it and figure it out and, y'know, send someone to counseling and talk about it. No, no, no...just show up and play or else. Ford: What has been the response from the players when you give them this message? Dumars: They know I'm a straight-shooter. I'm not going to mince words. They understand where I'm coming from. When I tell guys that, they just kind of sit and say "I know you mean business. I understand." It's simple, if you can't bring that edge every night, you CAN'T play for me here in Detroit. There's no two ways about it. No hard feelings. Ford: Was Carlos Delfino an example of what you're looking to do to inconsistent players? Dumars: For some players, they're just not going to fit in well here. It was like that with Darko. And then you move them somewhere else, and they play more consistently for whatever reason. But I'm not going to take shots at Delfino. The finances played a role, too, when you look at what we have to do this summer. Ford: Any chance that any of the core get moved? Dumars: I'm not looking to have a fire-sale. But this is the first time I can say I'd listen to offers, and pull the trigger if it made sense for the organization. There are no untouchables. Ford: What about Chauncey Billups? Dumars: I've said it all along -- it is my top priority to re-sign Chauncey in the off-season. Ford: And you don't anticipate anything happening like Ben Wallace, where he decides he wants to try something different? Dumars: I think he's in a different place than Ben. I asked him if he wants to go someplace else, and he knows we want him back. Hopefully when the time comes, his agent and I can sit down and get something done. Ford: You've got Amir Johnson, who really had a great season in the NBDL. What do you see in his future as he is a restricted free agent this summer? Dumars: If Chauncey Billups is the first priority, Amir Johnson is just behind him. We want him around, and feel like he can be key piece in our future going forward. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. We'll do whatever it takes to make sure he's here for years to come. Ford: The Pistons have had a mixed history with the draft - when you draft high, you haven't had luck (Darko Milicic, Mateen Cleaves, Rodney White). But when you've had lower selections, you've done well (Amir Johnson, Mehmet Okur). Dumars: I think that's because there's less risk with the lower selections. The higher picks are (generally) younger, and you're not quite sure what you're getting. Lower picks tend to be more established. It's been tough for higher-pick potential to work out here because we've been such a veteran team, and they can't get the minutes. Ford: How does that history play into your thought then with someone like a Thaddeus Young, the freshman (small forward from Georgia Tech) with super potential? Do you just say, well, he can't come in here and crack the rotation? Dumars: The difference now is that my core guys are not at the beginning of their prime anymore. Back with Rodney and Darko, they were coming in when my core guys were getting ready to go on a six-year run. It's a different place now. So now it's easier to draft those higher-rated guys now. Ford: So at this point, it's less about experience and more about who you have rated as the best player? Dumars: Absolutely. Now that my core guys - a couple of them are hitting their 30's now - it's easier to draft those younger guys now, those guys like Amir Johnson, because you need that energy now. Ford: What does the future of the Pistons look like? Can you maintain that level of excellence in Detroit next year, and for years to come? Dumars: I think we can. We're not going to blow up the core of our team. If we do something major, it could be one of the four guys. But if it's one of the core, we're going to get a great player in return. What I think you're going to see is more Jason Maxiell, more Amir Johnson, and more of other young players. Over the next three years, you'll see an infusion of young guys while your core is still good. The transition has to take place while veterans and younger players are on the court at the same time. Ford: It seems like that's been the secret to the San Antonio Spurs' success have done with Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili, for example, coming in while they're still competing, and Gregg Popovich having to weather the storm a little bit. Dumars: Exactly. Blowing up a team is so hard to do because it's so hard to build an elite team. And it's so easy for people to cavalierly say "Oh, just blow the whole thing up." Are you kidding me? People have no idea how hard it is to build an elite team. Losing in the conference finals the last two years was gut-wrenchingly disappointing. But if you blow your team up, there's no guarantee. You could be sitting here for ten years, Chad, trying to get it back, saying "Wow, maybe we blew it up a little bit too soon." I'm not against change; I'll change one of these guys out if I have to. But blowing the team up? Man, people have no idea what kind of work it takes to build a team like this. Ford: Always a great, candid interview.
