And on to the Pistons
"When I was at the University of Minnesota, we had another guy who came in, and
Flip and this guy, all they did was study film," Wilson says. "We'd go on the
road, and back then, we had those 16mm projectors, and all these guys wanted to
do was watch film. I'd be like, 'You guys want to go out, walk around, go to
dinner?' They'd go, 'No, we want to watch film.'
"Flip's roommate on the road was Tony Dungy."
Wilson left in Minnesota in 1975, after Saunders' sophomore year, and headed to
San Francisco State for nine seasons, including two stints as the head coach.
Wilson was then hired in 1985 at Chapman College. He was there until 1990, when
he decided to work for his college roommate, Greg Saunders, in the hotel
industry.
Greg Saunders, 59, had been general manager of the Marriott Chicago Downtown
before becoming vice president and managing director of Hyatt Regency Chicago.
He recently left that post to head Hyatt's new condo hotel on the Las Vegas
strip.
。
Wilson worked for Greg Saunders in human resources and sales recruitment before
leaving in 1998 to work for a headhunter. He did that until 2001, when Flip
Saunders, coaching the Minnesota Timberwolves, hired Wilson to direct the
team's youth basketball program and other activities.
"He reads people really well," Saunders said. "He understands what motivates
them."
Wilson, who has had two back surgeries and walks with a limp, said he always
has been a people person.
"I don't know it it's biorhythms, sugar levels or what," Wilson said with a
laugh, "but I know when the guys are focused or not. When I come in off
warm-ups, off the court, Flip will sometimes say, 'How are the guys? What's the
read?' "
When Saunders was hired by the Pistons in July 2005, he told Wilson: "I'm not
going anywhere without you."
When the Pistons defeated Chicago in the second round this month, Wilson knew
the right way to celebrate. He had two coolers of salmon and crab legs -- the
head coach's favorite -- flown in from Seattle.
There is one anecdote, though, that Saunders says Wilson has wrong -- how
Saunders met Debbie, his wife.
Wilson claims he instigated their first date during Saunders' freshman year,
when he offered to give members of Minnesota's dance line money for dinner to
take out some of the freshman players. Debbie was one of the dancers.
Not true, Saunders said.
"He owes me $50," Wilson said with a laugh. "With interest, it's probably $300
by now."
Saunders said: "He's got a great sense of humor, no question."
