Now they were on I-75, heading south toward Ohio and making good time.
They had two stops that day: One was in Akron, to see Kevin Wilson's father,
who's 91, lives alone and still fixes pot roast on Saturdays.
The other was just outside Cleveland, in a village called Brooklyn Heights --
home of Walter and Kay Saunders, parents of Pistons head coach Flip Saunders.
Wilson, who holds the title "special assistant" on Saunders' coaching staff,
was behind the wheel that day. But Saunders will tell you that his friend has
steered him through much more than traffic in his career, selflessly helping
him along because, well, that's what Wilson does.
Wilson
It was basketball that brought the two together 40 years ago, and it unites
them again tonight, as the Pistons play the Cavaliers in Game 4 of the Eastern
Conference finals in Cleveland. The Pistons lead the series, 2-1.
"Even back when he was out of coaching and working for my brother (Greg), I
would talk to him," Saunders said of Wilson. "Bobbin (Wilson's wife) would
always kid that if the phone rang at 1 or 1:30 a.m., they used to be scared
something bad was happening -- until they came to figure out it was just me
calling.
Bobbin(Wilson的老婆)总会戏称如果电话在凌晨一点或一点半响起,他们
"I used him a lot as far as a sounding board. I still do. We're like brothers.
We can be honest and not sensitive, something that can be tough for people."
Like many friendships, the relationship between Saunders and Wilson was built
over time -- long before Saunders, 52, became one of the NBA's most respected
coaches and Wilson, a former college head coach, became his trusted adviser.
When Saunders was 12, he used to hang out with the Ashland College men's
basketball team. It was a privilege that came with being Greg Saunders' little
brother.
Greg, seven years older than Flip, was an undergrad at Ashland and student
manager of the team at the time. Wilson was Ashland's 6-4 starting point guard,
a scrappy defensive-minded recruit of the late Bill Musselman. By the time he
graduated, Wilson was a two-time Division II All-America who was good enough to
be a late-round draft pick of the Baltimore Bullets (in the supplemental draft)
and the ABA's Los Angeles Stars in 1970.
Wilson also happened to be Greg's roommate -- a bonus for Flip. It wasn't long
before Wilson started treating Saunders as if he were his kid brother, making
up other nicknames for the impressionable boy, like Flopper and Noz.
Noz
。
"The best story he tried to convince me of was that, when he was in college, he
drove his car from Cleveland to Detroit across Lake Erie," Saunders recalled.
Wilson said: "Actually, the first time I saw Flip, I was in high school, a
regional game, and Greg guarded me. So now we're at Ashland College -- now
called Ashland University -- and Greg says that he has this younger brother
who's really into basketball. Flip ended up being on my team at the summer camp
I coached, and played great.
"That's how he got affiliated with us. He would come down just about every
weekend and watch me play. He started wearing my number, No. 24."
Though Wilson was a star player, he was a little shy socially. Not his roommate
, though.
"Well, Greg liked to date -- a lot -- and I didn't, so he'd say, 'I've got a
date, you watch my little brother,' " Wilson said with a laugh. "So I got stuck
making the popcorn and watching TV shows with Flip."
"
But their evenings usually ended the same way, talking basketball.
"Right from the get-go, he would ask more questions than anybody else," Wilson
remembered. "But his real claim to fame was that he was a real hustler. He'd
dive for loose balls, take charges -- and he just didn't worry about his job,
but the other four (players) and what their job was. He was always trying to
tinker with offenses."
Then shifting to the grown-up version of Saunders, who's in his second season
as Pistons coach, Wilson says: "Flip is probably to pro basketball what Bill
Walsh is to pro football. Bill Walsh brought that West Coast offense, and
that's the way Flip is -- very innovative with lots of little wrinkles. We
change up all the time. Our playbook is huge. How these guys have it memorized,
I have no idea. But that's his edge."
