Laughs at Second City: Pistons chuckle at Game 4 loss
By Chris Sheridan ESPN.com
CHICAGO -- Not only were the Detroit Pistons able to shrug this one off, a coup
le of them were able to laugh it off.
Richard Hamilton and Antonio McDyess both emitted, a kind of "you gotta be kidd
ing me" laugh, when I asked them in the locker room after Game 4 whether they w
ere now worried about the Chicago Bulls.
Dice
"Worried? No. we're going back to our home," McDyess said following Detroit's 1
02-87 loss. "Why worry? We just feel we let one get away from us. We didn't pla
y with the aggressiveness and intensity that we normally play with, and the who
le second half we played like: 'OK, we're down, but we know we can come back.'
You can't do that."
Let's face it: the Pistons wouldn't be the Pistons without a game like this. Fo
r the past two or three seasons now they've been the quintessential flip-a-swit
ch team, a group who can take their game to another level when circumstances di
ctate.
"We do have a second gear -- everyone knows that," Chauncey Billups said.
And that second gear was in evidence early in the fourth quarter after the Bull
s appeared to have this game safely wrapped up.
The Bulls had their fourth and fifth turnovers of the final quarter within 15 s
econds of each other just after the clock ticked inside of four minutes, and th
e anxiety in the building was as palpable as it had been three nights earlier.
The Pistons had pulled from 21 down at the start of the quarter to 87-80, and t
he Pistons were coming down the court with a chance to make it even closer befo
re Kirk Hinrich established defensive position on the perimeter and drew an off
ensive foul on Billups.
The Bulls got the ball back, and when Richard Hamilton blew a defensive assignm
ent ("blew" was Flip Saunders' word, not mine) on Ben Gordon and left him open
at the 3-point line, Gordon drilled the jumper to stop the bleeding.
Saunders' ensuing Hack-a-Ben strategy resulted in Ben Wallace calmly knocking d
own three of four foul shots, and that was it: No sweep, no week-to-10 days off
before the next game, no chance for the Pistons to spend a lazy Tuesday night
watching the Jazz-Warriors game from the comfort of their own couches while sho
oting text message barbs at Big Ben. Instead, they'll have to take another shot
at finishing this thing off.
"The overall energy and urgency was a factor," Saunders said, "and when we coul
dn't get it below seven [points], we weren't able to put enough pressure on the
m to see how they'd react.
"We've got to play the way we're supposed to, and tonight we were out of charac
ter," Saunders said. "Both teams have gotten beat, so now we have a series."
A series, eh, Flip?
Even though no team in NBA history has ever come all the way back from a 3-0 de
ficit? Even though teams down 3-1 have an all-time postseason record of 8-162?
Even when the Bulls showed themselves incapable of keeping Games 1 and 2 close
in Detroit?
Well, since there is a Game 5, we'll let Saunders have his point.
But the bigger point is this: The Pistons are their own worst enemy.
The Pistons have said all season they want to get away from the flip-a-switch m
entality that contributed to their undoing last year, when they relaxed so much
after going up 2-0 on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round that they lo
st their next three. Yes, they recovered to win that series, but it took so muc
h out of them that they didn't have a lot left in the tank for the Miami Heat i
n the conference finals.
"Yeah, that's true, but believe me, we're going to learn from our mistakes in t
his one" McDyess said. "We know we should have played like we normally play, bu
t we didn't. We'll talk about that, and we know what we need to do. We can't gi
ve them no life."
As for the Bulls, everyone -- with the possible exception of Andres Nocioni --
showed that there is indeed a pulse inside that beats harder under pressure, a
pulse that kept beating just strong enough when this one was on the verge of ge
tting away.
Whether it was Wallace making those three free throws while also going for 11 p
oints and 17 rebounds, Kirk Hinrich (19 points, 10 assists, two steals) for onc
e being the more aggressive point guard in the game, Luol Deng (25 points, 13 r
ebounds) finding the midrange game that served him so well in the first round o
r Gordon hitting the biggest shot of the game, it was a collective step-up stat
ement that will restore some measure of their pride and give them at least a fa
int glimmer of hope heading into Game 5.
班蛙那三球关键罚球,让他拿下11分与17篮板,Hinrich(19分,10助攻,2抄截)无庸置疑
"We looked much more like ourselves today," Bulls Coach Scott Skiles said. "I w
ouldn't say we coasted in, that's for sure, because it got a little hairy at th
e end. But in general, we looked much more relaxed and at ease. Our guys clearl
y had no intention of rolling over."
Maybe they'll roll over in Game 5 with as much passivity as they did in Games 1
, 2 and 3. Or maybe the Bulls will bring the same energy and efficiency they ha
d Sunday and truly make this a series.
But despite what Saunders said, this thing still isn't really much of a series
just yet.
The Pistons know that to be true better than anyone, which is why they were abl
e to laugh this one off.
The "this is no joke" stage is still nowhere near arriving.
