I do not envy Hall of Fame committees.
I understand it is a tough, unglamorous decision to look at a variety of worthy
people in a certain field and whittle down the list into the most worthy, the
truly revolutionary, or the indisputably blessed. And I can't claim to know
what the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame looks for when it inducts
its members.
Everyone has his or her own opinion. Last year, when Pistons president Joe
Dumars got in, a majority of the basketball community applauded. But there were
dissenters.
This I do know -- the people who have worked for Pistons owner Bill Davidson
seem to be unanimous in agreement. They think their boss belongs in the Hall of
Fame, for which he was nominated but not selected this season, and they're not
saying that just to earn brownie points.
I believe they really mean it.
"There's no question," Tayshaun Prince said. "His resume speaks for itself. And
he's a great person, first off. The organization he has put together and the
things he has done, that just speaks for itself."
Davidson is responsible not just for putting the pieces in place to win three
NBA titles and two WNBA championships, but for revolutionizing the sports-arena
experience with the building of the Palace, for helping the league construct a
salary cap and free-agency system that promotes fiscal responsibility while
leaving a good chunk of control in the hands of the players, and introducing
things that are now universally part of the NBA, such as team planes.
"Being the innovator he is, he brought the aspect of having your own arena,
having your own everything, your own plane," Pistons point guard Lindsey Hunter
said. "He started all that. When you're a trailblazer like that, you set
precedence for other people, and I think that's what really puts you apart."
Davidson is somewhat an aloof personality in Detroit. He doesn't give many
interviews, and he keeps most of his thoughts about the team to himself.
"He doesn't say much, but he says enough to let you know he's watching," former
Piston Ben Wallace said.
Davidson often can be spotted in his front-row seat along the baseline by the
Pistons' bench -- usually with a smile on his face. Besides those public
appearances -- and the occasional news that he has donated another lump of his
fortune to a cause near to his heart like the University of Michigan -- he is
not at center stage when it comes to the Pistons.
His employees praise him for that, because he always does what needs to be done
to make the organization a winner, but does it while staying in the background.
"He provided a family-type atmosphere for the guys," said Wallace, who played
for Davidson's team for six years before signing with the Bulls. "He did
everything that he could do as an owner to help us reach the goals we were
trying to achieve.
"If we needed something on the plane, he made sure we got it. If we needed
something in the arena, he made sure we had it. If we needed to change seats
for our family, he made sure those things got done. So he was not only an owner
, he was around, he was aware of what was going on."
Wallace said after he chose to leave the team, he continued to work out at the
Auburn Hills practice facility, knowing he had Davidson's blessing.
Davidson
And he said Davidson never had a bitter word to say to him, even though he left
.
"He told me I deserve everything I was getting," Wallace said. "He's always
been a classy guy."
And although the committee chose to keep Davidson out for now, the people who
know him well are convinced he can't stay out forever.
"He's been an icon in the league," coach Flip Saunders said.
