07/31/2006 4:15 PM ET Bucs add Nady, Chacon on busy day Casey, Wells among five veterans headed to new teams By Ed Eagle / MLB.com PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates continued reshape their roster Monday with a flurry of trades just prior to the 4 p.m. ET deadline. After sending first baseman Sean Casey to the Detroit Tigers in the morning for Minor League reliever Brian Rogers, Bucs GM Dave Littlefield continued his active day by dealing veteran reliever Roberto Hernandez and left-handed starter Oliver Perez to the New York Mets for outfielder Xavier Nady, sending infielder/outfielder Craig Wilson to the New York Yankees for starting pitcher Shawn Chacon and trading right-hander Kip Wells to the Texas Rangers for Minor League right-hander Jesse Chavez. The biggest catch of the day for the Pirates is Nady. The 27-year-old batted .264 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 75 games with New York. A former second-round pick of the San Diego Padres, Nady is a lifetime .263 hitter with 39 home runs and 131 RBIs in parts of five seasons with the Padres and Mets. He will likely step in as the Bucs' everyday right fielder. This was not the Pirates' first attempt to acquire Nady. The team had interest in the outfielder when they sent Brian Giles to the Padres in August 2003. The Pirates ultimately agreed on a package from San Diego that included Perez and All-Star Jason Bay. Chacon was 5-3 with a 7.00 ERA in 17 appearances with the Yankees, including 11 starts. An All-Star in 2003 with Colorado, the right-hander has a career mark of 36-51 with a 5.09 ERA in six seasons with the Rockies and Yankees. With the trades of Wells and Perez, Chacon will step in as the veteran member of the Pirates' starting rotation. Chavez, 22, went 2-5 with a 4.43 ERA in 39 combined relief appearances at Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma. He was Texas' 42nd-round pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
