Brandenburg Concertos
Lindsay Kemp
In March 1721 , Bach sent a carefully copied set of six concertos to the
Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg, together with a dedication
(couched in fashionable French ) claiming them to be a demonstration of
"the small musical talent that Heaven has granted me". Bach had met the
Margrave two years earlier when visiting Berlin to buy a new harpsichord for
the court at Coethen, where he was at that time employed, and had promised
to supply him with "some pieces of my composition". That he took so long
to do so, and that what he eventually sent was a highly diverse set of
concertos "with various instruments", composed to exploit the particular
forces of the ensemble under his direction back in Coethen, may explain why
the Margrave neither acknowledged their receipt, nor had them performed.
Bach seems to have been looking around for a new job at this time (he
eventually left to become Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723), and it is
possible that his tardy remembrance of the Margrave's request was prompted
by an opportunistic wish to impress him with his talents. The Margrave,
one assumes, was hoping more for something his own orchestra could play
than for a prettily presented job application.
