I think his answer is very vague and general. You should start contacting
him about having him as your advisor, working in his lab, and applying for school.
Of course, funding issue is important. I cannot tell from his message that he'd
like to have you in his lab yet. We often say "interested in collaboration" for
a polite response. You need more specific information.
