Hi, maybe you are right.
I would just share what I have seen in my place.
I personally have never cared such things, and even no body cared this problem
in my lab. Nobody argued or complained such things. I have even seen senior
research fellows (or you may called them post-doctors) doing experimental
work by themselves, although they did supervisor students.
There are always good students and not good students everywhere. So what?
They are paying tutition fee to study; not like contractors that you can
always ask the results. Yes, if they work hard and achieve something, this
would appear on their CV or recommendation. However, somebody cares this and
some doesn't; or might be they have another much more important thing to do.
Whatever reasons they can give, I would say "that's ok, see you later, have
fun", with smile face. Sometimes, I did really envy them, who have a party to
waste their young and bright lives but rather in a cool and quiet laboratory.
The other excuses might be shopping, taking care of kids,
staying with boy/girl, see parents, etc.
I never suspected those excuses were real or not.
Just a little suggestions (if you don't agree me, just forget lines below):
1. Whatever PhD or not PhD, undergraduates or postgraduates, they are people.
2. Believe people, if they obviously are not harmful to you. They say party
tonight, isn't that reasonable to have an afternoon to prepare for their
interested or beloved girls/boys?
Have you seen 'Back to the Future'?
The girl might be his wife in the future. Quite nice, isn't it.
3. Do not assume students should be whatever good or as good as you (I know
Taiwanese usually do so, but I don't like this). You provides the
opportunities of learning; to learn to what extent is up to the students.
4. Do not always think something is 'good for you', THEREFORE, 'you got to do
it'. This is not a sort of democracy or proper education. Again, I know lot
of Taiwanese doing this, and I just don't like this since I was a kid.
5. Similarly, you think 'F=ma' is really very important and everybody must be
able to answer that in a second even when waken up in their dream. How can
you know if some of them are thinking 'E=MC^2' when they are not listening to
you in your lectures or lab works? It doesn't have to be 'E=MC^2', even a new
idea can make them success in their life. I know Mr Gates is much richer than
Dr Me, and he sponsors a lot of research work. How about you? contribute
more? I hope so.
Above all, same words again. Always see the bright side and do your own job.
The way to a PhD is really hard, like climbing a mountain. I don't know how
I could survive, if I did not have the patience and the good mood...
Don't complain and good luck.
