I think, this is probably 'your' problem. The reason I thought so is, nobody wants to do uninteresting job. A laboratory job can be interesting or uninteresting, depending on whether the researchers understand what they are doing. An interesting job usually has a very clear point, or objective; it can be totally a mechanical or repeating work, however, if you do know what you are doing, what the result can be expected and what you are goint to have ( e.g. payment, a degree, a paper, etc), then you will do it happily. I believe those undergraduates were really beginners on your topic. They got order to do some experimental work, however, not fully understood the objective. Whether they did the work or not, they were going to get their degree. If, now, you give a really boring work to them and you yourself do not even stay with them to explain the knowledge on the going, even me would just reject your order and waste time on what I think is interesting. The normal students will say no in that situation. It is also noted that Taiwanese students usually do not say no, because they were not taught how to do it, particularly to their teachers... However, you are not working in Taiwan, are you? Attending a whatever party is really good reason to leave in a laboratory work, particularly in the evening. No problem at all. It is you who get payment for your work or are going to be conferred a research degree, not them.
