Just list some situations I have experienced or heard: 1. There are a lot of homework, and most of the students doing copy job. You are a good PhD student and you think you can do better than them. However, the situation is, good students might get lower grade... 2. Similar situations occurring at examinations, as previous post. There are a lot of problems copied from textbooks. All the master students know where they are except just some poor PhD students (less classmates or less playmates...). 3. Some guys cheat in the examinations successfully. You are a good and honest student with honour to God, so you don't. Unfortunately, the exam is very difficult... 4. The course leader is somebody's supervisor and unfortunately you are not in his group. The lecturer asks a lot of problems which are highly related to the basic knowledge in that group. This can be worse if he does want his students to bypass QE quickly (so publish more or do more work) or he encourages some of his students to change course to PhD from master. Some lecturers might want to attract more new PhD students to their group by offering this... 5. The course leader does good cover for his lots. No matter you believe or not. My friend complained to me that, in his department, there is a professor opening a course; his students, who also attended the course, made the mid-term and final examination sheets and marked those sheets including their own. All their guys got 9x, x>=5, while the others got something 72 +-2. I am sorry I cannot tell you any more details as I have promised somebody not to open those details any time anywhere. So, don't ask me about that. If you don't believe them, just don't believe me. That is OK. However, those made some of the main reasons of my disappointment about studying in Taiwan.
