This is quite usual to be honest. I do my cooking every day and even shop my food from traditional markets. I know many people are going to answer 'yes'. However, in the real world, nothing is free. Your payment must come from somebody. You get your payment because of your contribution benefits somebody; and this is why they pay you. Conversely, those who are not interested in your work will not give you any money. Therefore, it is your PhD, it benefits you most; so, don't you think you should be responsible for all the cost? (don't be hassle, we know you do this quite well). Of course, your research will benefit the project sponsor, so you stand on a good position to ask payment from them. If, unfortunately, you cannot get any money from anyone, except from yourself, you still can borrow student loan from the bank. Of course you have to pay your loan back when you finish your PhD. This is still not too bad, as actually, some of the interests are paid by the government, or the taxpayers, but not by you. We, or the taxpayers, do support you by this fair way, just like we have supported many small industries and companies to invest in their own future. Some of them used the money to make their own businesses, and finally they become big men/women and can easily pay the loan back. They, or their union, don't ask equal amount of free money from the government, do they? Similarly, your PhD is just your own business; not of your father, not of the government nor of anyone of any whoever. Some day, you might become a big man because of this, your government or the taxpayers will not ask you to pay some free money or free work. Isn't it very fair? Gentlemen, please forgive me for having to mention this here. There are many beggars who will ask something by showing they are poor. (Ironically, some beggars are really very rich... anyway.) So, just remind of the options I mentioned above might help you. Good luck. Again, we keep saying that your study/degree is your own business and of your own cost. Wish this is the latest time... PhD is a very good investment for some people. (At least Einstein will agree this.) Comparing with your case, I personally even have invested much more (tuition fee) than yours on my own. Like you, I am not a rich person, but I never thought things so negatively. If you go back to read my old articles, I mentioned, a PhD is just like an engineering work to build a very high building. Things are usually very difficult in the very beginning; half of the time might be spent on doing the foundation. I personally cannot understand why there are always some people still recognise 'free money', such unfair option, is the only solution. In fact, I personally did suggest many alternatives again and again in my posts. There are also many people provide similar view. It is quite interesting that nobody questioning or discussing the possibilities of these options, but just sticking on asking 'free money'. No matter you believe or not, you will not get more 'free money' from the government by the protest. Moreover, the 'free money' can only decrease and evantually disappear in the near future, although the school part-time jobs will still exist then. Am I right? we will see. --
