It is not 1805 now. You have got much more utilities to support your studies. How about to apply student loan from the bank system? You don't have to pay the interest when you are remaining to be a student. You pay your debt back when you make money after finishing your degree. This is what European students are doing now. I believe there are many postgraduates in North America doing part-time jobs or sponsored research projects. They don't have any free money allocated for students without very hardship. You can manage your time to balance your health and funding. Don't say that postgraduates should not do part-time jobs nor apply loan. It is your PhD, not of anyone else. Be responsible to yourself. You should think about the concept of investment for the future.
