Keep thinking and thinking just make yourself older and older. Every PhD has different story, including how long they spend on their courses. This highly depends on everything: supervisors, schools, countries, ... etc. Asking such a question is just wasting your time because every answer here is personal experiences rather than widely survay. and, hence, might be rubbish for yourself. You don't really know how it will be until you complete your PhD. I would say, a PhD is a long long tunnel which takes several years to see the dim light from the other end. It is not a guarantee that there is a light leading your orientation in the dark, although good supervision is always there. Nobody knows how long it will take from end to end. You cannot run to fast in the dark, even when the dim light from the other end finally appears --- you could ignore the stone on the road in this situation. You cannot rather walk slowly and carefully, as you will run out your time. So, whether you understand my words or think they are wasting your time.
